White Spots on Throat

White spots in throat can often be an unnerving and discomfiting condition to deal with. This is because at times, not only are they difficult to diagnose, but they often may also be a cause of embarrassment, as these white spots may act as a nidus for bacteria, due to which you would be giving out a bad and unpleasant odor while speaking. One of the most common reasons for the presence of white spots in throat is candidiasis. Candidiasis is a type of yeast or fugal infection that affects various parts of the oral cavity. Spread of candidal infection into the throat is relatively rare, as candidiasis itself is an opportunistic infection. There may be other symptoms accompanying the presence of white spots, like there may be a burning sensation in the throat, difficulty in eating spicy food, pain, etc.

Herpes
Herpes is a viral infection that affects the mucus membranes of the body. Thus, this condition can occur in the mouth or in the vagina. However, as an extension of oral herpes, there can be herpes in throat as well. This mostly occurs in people who have had oral sex with a person suffering from oral herpes. If the person is immunocompromised, then there is a higher chance of oral herpes spreading into the throat. The herpes in throat is normally visible as white spots in the throat, as the small blisters look white in color, which later burst and leave marks and painful scars in the throat. It is often seen that in cases of people suffering from herpes in throat, there are many systemic symptoms seen as well. These include fever, malaise, difficulty eating and swallowing food, burning sensation and in some rare cases, there may even be difficulty in breathing.

Tonsilolith
Tonsilolith or tonsil stone is a condition where there are calcium deposits which occur on the surface of the tonsils, which leads to white spots on throat and tonsils. These stones may be small or big in nature, and in fact, at times, they may be so big that they cause difficulty in talking and swallowing. These white spots on tonsils that occur due to calcium deposits mostly are seen in the crypts of the tonsils, as these are the places that can easily lodge such calcareous deposits.

Treatment Options

The treatment will depend on the underlying factor that is causing them. If the white spots are because of candidiasis, then the use of antifungal drugs will help in thrush treatment. However, depending on the severity of the condition, the medication can be topically or orally administered. When it comes to herpes in throat, then the use of anti-viral drugs greatly helps in mitigating the symptoms to a considerable extent, as there is no complete herpes cure. However, it is important to always remain hydrated and ensure that the airway passage remains clear. As far as tonsil stones treatment is concerned, it is important to get rid of the stones either by natural methods, or if need be, with the help of surgical intervention.

In certain rare cases, a sore throat may also lead to white spots on the throat. However, in the end, it is best to visit a doctor, and get the condition diagnosed and treated at the earliest so as to prevent any further problems.
