Causes of White Spots on Face
Vitiligo: Melanocytes are the cells the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives your skin a characteristic color. The loss of melanocytes causes white spots on the skin under effect. Such a disease condition is known as vitiligo. Face, rectal and genital area are common places of its occurrence.
Nevus Depigmentosus: The medical condition in which the melanocytes on some part of the skin do not produce pigment in required amount is called nevus depigmentosus. As a result, the skin part under effect develop white spots. The face is a common place of its occurrence.
Pityriasis Alba: Pityriasis alba is one of the common reasons behind white spots on face of children. It is a dermatological disorder that is marked by sub-normal activity of melanocytes. It may show a decrease in the number and size of melanocytes as well. The affected skin is often dry with fine lines, and can be easily mistaken for vitiligo.
Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis: Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis is a skin disorder that is characterized by the formation of tiny, round and smooth spots of lighter color on the skin. This particular disease affects those skin parts that are commonly exposed to sunlight such as face, shins and forearms. However, it may occur on chest, shoulder and back as well.
Tinea Versicolor: Tinea versicolor is a skin infection that leads to the formation of white spots on face, neck, hands, chest, any other body part under its impact. The causative agent is a fungus called Pityrosporum ovale. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may worsen the condition. It is more prevalent in areas with hot and humid climate.
Treatment of White Spots on Face
The medical treatment for white spots depends entirely on the cure of its underlying cause. Usually, topical skin creams and lotion containing steroids are prescribed. You may be asked to stay away from sunlight and ultraviolet rays as they interfere with the treatment process. There are certain things that you can try to accelerate the process of treatment and improve the appearance of your face. These are mentioned here.
- Minimize direct exposure to the sun as much as possible.
- If you have to go out, wear a quality sunscreen at least half an hour prior to exposure.
- Keep your face clean, i.e., free from micro-organisms and dust.
- Rinse your face skin with dilute apple cider vinegar once a day as it restricts the growth of bacteria and fungi.
- Wash your face twice a day with a mild face wash.
- Keep your face well moisturized as dryness can make the condition even worse.
- In case of fungal infection, use a non-prescription antifungal topical cream.
- Remove dead cells from the skin surface by a mild scrub laid with exfoliating granules. Avoid exfoliation in case of fungal infection.
- Apply an anti-dandruff shampoo containing ketoconazole on the white spots. Keep it on for 15 minutes before rinsing with water.
- Soak fenugreek seeds overnight in a glass of water. Wash your face with this water the next morning.
- Apply Aloe vera pulp on the white spots for fast recovery.
- Apply green tea on the affected area before bedtime.
- Spread a paste made of honey and cinnamon powder in the white spots.
- Make a paste of ginger or garlic and apply it on the affected parts of your face to restore the normal skin condition.
