Whistler, British Columbia - Kokanee Crankworx BMX Race
This article describes the Kokanee Crankworx competition held annually in Whistler, BC.
Hosted every summer at Whistler-Blackcomb within Whistler, BC, Kokanee Crankworx is a week and a half long festival of mountain biking. The catch phrase for the 2007 celebration was "Dirt, meet insanity. Insanity, meet dirt". The 2006 Kokanee Crankworx motto was "Nine days of Events, Entertainment, and the Sickest Riding on the Planet". The organizers promoted the event as "one of the premier mountain biking festivals in the world". For the 2006 and 2007 events, each event was able to attract more than ten thousand people. The festival has been a big success for both the festival and the town of Whistler.
A big part of the annual Crankworx festival is a Whistler village-wide party and celebration of BMX mountain biking. There are lots and lots of events that happen throughout the week. Some of these events include BMX mountain bike tricks and demonstrations, musical performances from well-known and lesser known artists, and other forms of entertainment. In 2006, the festival had included an appearance and performances from the great band "De La Soul". Sponsors also play a visible role in the festival. Numerous manufacturers have booths in the festival. Such notable companies like Kokanee beer, Volkswagen, Nissan Motors, Jim Beam, Monster Energy, Telus, and the Kona Bicycle Company all sponsor the annual Kokanee Crankworx gathering.
Rip.tv and crankworx.com both had webcast for the event last year. Kokanee Crankworx has Mountain biking competitions in numerous disciplines. The Kokanee Crankworx competition feature variants of the normal BMX mountain bike events. For example some of the events include the classic downhill race, a Super D race, an Air Downhill race and an endurance downhill race.
