Whispered Dreams Chapter 27 The Last One
Happy ending...
Zoey's point of view
Longest.pause.ever! I was about to walk away, start the usual cursing myself, trip over something and finally beat myself to the wall but thankfully I was stopped. Yeah I was stopped by a loud throat clearing from Jake.
"Umm...care for a dance?" he looked awkward yet somehow cute.
I don't know what I looked like but Jake's eyes sparkle and a smirk spread around his face.
"What? You're not gonna reject me are you?"
"What? No... No..."
"Seriously?" he looked disappointed.
"No... I mean why you are asking me and not pulling me to the dance floor already?" I yelled frustrated from the obvious stuttering.
He chuckled a little bit and started pulling me toward the door I came from, away from the blue dance crowd.
"Where are you taking me?"
He didn't speak until a secluded, more like hidden stairway appeared.
"Since you rejected me, I didn't risk asking you again" he said, and I could sense the double meaning in that.
"Yeah I can see that, but Jake I never rejected you" I said hoping he could hear my silent message too.
He didn't utter a word and as for me I don't know if I wanted an answer to that so I just relied on Jake to take me wherever he was taking me.
When I saw the rooftop garden in front of me, I was in awe. It was beautiful. The rooftop was probably above the entrance door. The railings were holding the sign board for the club. And there were lights all over the place, made the night look more beautiful. There was a porch to the side of the place, and Jake was pulling me there.
This wasn't the first time I was alone with Jake, but it felt like the very first time, my heart was about to push its way out with its heavy beat, my legs felt like jelly, if Jake wouldn't have been pulling me I'd have fallen into the ground.
"Sit" Jake said in his sweet voice.
"We're gonna miss the whole program Jake. We better get down. They might be looking for us" I said.
"By them you mean Annie right?" Jake said with his eyes closed.
I simply nodded. Well Annie was his girlfriend and his partner.
"We broke up" Jake announced with so much sadness in his tone.
I felt a pang of guilt hit me; it was all because of me. I did this to them. So this is why he wanted to talk to me? Annie, that sweet chick who I came to like in a mere couple of days must've been so hurt and Jake... I couldn't decipher what he was thinking.
Somehow I felt half bad, the other evil half of me was about to break out and start jumping in joy. But I didn't, the guilt was a little too overwhelming.
"Jake... I'm so sorry. Is that why you brought me here? Do you want me to talk to Annie? I'll do anything for you." I said as I rubbed his shoulder.
I heard a couple of groans and frustrating sounds and I swear I could point out Annie's voice in that. I was about to turn, but Jake caught my face in his hands.
"Zo... no I don't want you to talk to Annie. She knows how I feel. We talked about it already and besides she knows" he said with a weird expression.
I don't know but from what I could see of his face, he was looking excited and frustrated at the same time. Was there even such kind of expression? Wait... what did he mean by 'she knows'?
"Jake, what are you talking about? What does Annie know?" I asked in confusion.
He took a deep breath and oddly it reminded me of a guy preparing himself to propose a girl he loved, to marry him. And just like a girl having a hint of getting proposed by the guy she loved, I felt my heart flutter and increase its speed, my hands and feet getting cold. Shut up Zo, this isn't about you. It's about Jake and Annie!
Jake used his lovey-dovey tone that I always dreamed he would use for me and repeated what he had said just earlier. "She knows..." he sighed never letting his hands go from my cheeks.
Something told me I should let him continue, without asking the series of question that were shouting in my head.
"She knows... how I feel about you. How I can't ever have a good day if I don't see your face with that silly smile of yours. She knows that when I'm in a problem you're the first person I think of to share it with... though it's Rick and Mel I go for the solution." He and I both chuckled and I swear I heard other people giggle too but he continued. "How I had the worst days of my life when I couldn't talk to you. How I went almost crazy when I thought you hated me, were angry with me or if I had hurt you. How idiotic I felt when I didn't know myself enough to know that I loved you the entire time. Yeah ... Zo I don't know myself enough to have known that I loved you... but thankfully you did."
Did he just say... shut up and listen to him Zo!
"Annie knows all of this. She's smarter than me and she knows that I love you Zo, only you." He said with a smile in his face.
He brought his forehead to mine and whispered with his eyes closed.
"I love you Zoey."
A single drop of joyful tear slid down my eyes. At that moment I felt content, even if the world fell apart, I don't think I'd be worried a bit. I had my world with me in this terrace.
"I love you too Jake" I whispered back feeling so delightful. I had never meant something I'd said this much till now.
He lowered his head down, and brought his lips to mine. The kiss was just a sensuous peck of what was about to begin; only if it would have, we were disturbed by a bright flash. We broke apart from our cozy embrace and found Mel with Rosalie's camera in her hands with of course everyone else behind; hanging from their lips was the victory smile.
Suddenly every puzzle piece fell into place. This night was planned out. They all syndicated the plot of Jake and Zo story. All I could do was return their victory smile with an awe smile of my own.
"Finally, they are together" Rick chuckled.
But still I was concerned, about Annie. If they broke up just today, this would have been a major disturbing scene for her. Mel, Rick and Danny surrounded Jake as I pulled Annie out quietly.
"You're okay with this right? I mean I'll back off if you're not okay with it." I meant these words too somehow.
Suddenly every pair of eyes was on us and the silence was welcomed. Annie giggled a cutest giggle I've ever heard after Noah's giggle and said "Zo... you're not backing off to anywhere. Jake's right I really do know."
And suddenly everyone laughed a hearty and mighty laugh and I felt myself flush.
"You guys were the one making the noise weren't you?" I asked without meeting their gaze.
"YUP!" everyone replied and started laughing again.
"Okay! Enough of making my Zo blush. It's picture time." Mel chirped as she went on and fixed the camera.
After about 65 pictures and silly poses, they decided to hit the dance floor again and leave me and Jake alone. As they headed downstairs, I moved slowly towards Jake and put my arms around his neck. A silly smile as Jake had said plastered into my face as Jake had his infamous goofy grin on his.
FLASH!
"Mel!" we both yelled to the girl in the blue dress at the door with the camera pointing at us.
"Okay! Okay! I'm leaving"
We turned to each other and continued our incomplete kiss. My night was made! It was hands down the perfect night of my life as we sat down and talked and kissed and talked and kissed and kissed again.
"So you were about to back down huh?" Jake broke my train of thoughts and the comfortable silence we were sharing.
I knew he was glaring at me, at the moment I said those words to Annie.
What the hell was I supposed to reply to that question? The very first lie of my relationship wasn't gonna happen tonight. Nope. So I decided to dodge it.
"Umm... I think Mel's calling us. Lets go downstairs." I said as I moved to the door.
I increased my pace when I heard Jake say, "You little bundle of mischief. Come back right this minute."
I giggled at the tone he used and I was out the door. But Jake was right behind me and caught me even before I took the first step down.
"You're NOT backing down anytime soon to anywhere without me. You understand me?" he said with a serious tone but his face was teasing me with that glow in his eyes and that arrogant smile.
"Aye sir aye" I replied as I stubbed my laughter inside and I air saluted him with one hand.
"Now that's my girl" he laughed as he bent down to kiss me.
At that moment I knew my relationship wasn't going to be the perfect fairy tale but it's going to be worth stumbling over because it was Jake and because it was just a beginning.
And at the start line of my very difficult life ahead, I danced the night away, literally, with the people I love, my best friends and my boyfriend (*blush*blush*)

Hope it was worth all the wait! I'm sorry I was late again (ol' news right?) wait for the epilogue...
