Where to Get Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of the only vitamins that is manufactured by the human body and as such it can be difficult to find it otherwise. There are some foods that contain trace amounts of Vitamin D, but for the most part you are better off finding a good supplement instead of trying to drink 10 glasses of milk per day. In this article, we’ll talk about how to make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D and what can happen if you don’t. Make sure you take this advice to heart in order to prevent not only Vitamin D deficiency, but the health problems that can result if you aren’t getting enough.

Vitamin D is essential for keeping your bones strong and healthy. Lack of Vitamin D can lead to a weak skeletal system, which means your bones are at risk for breaking easily. Stress fractures are often caused by weak bones thanks to this condition.

Vitamin D also helps to prevent cancer, which is odd considering it is produced as a result of exposure to the sun, also known to cause cancer. This means that you need to get sunlight in order to produce Vitamin D, but make sure you don’t get too much and that you use sunblock whenever possible.

To make sure you get your daily recommended dose of Vitamin D, there are 3 sources you can use.

1. Sunlight - Getting 15 minutes per day seems to be enough to help your body produce the amount it needs to be healthy. Getting too much can lead to sunburn, or much worse skin cancer. You can also get Vitamin D from tanning beds armed with UVB bulbs or lamps. Sometimes these can be tough to find, so make sure to ask your sales representative before you sign up for a tanning contract.

2. Food - Milk, some orange juices, and meats contain trace amounts of Vitamin D, but you’d have to eat pounds of meat or drink gallons of fluids per day to meet your requirement. Some dairy products also contain Vitamin D, but your best bet is to try and find a mix of foods in order to supplement the times when you can’t get enough sunlight exposure.

3. Supplement - The best way, and possible the easiest, is to take a Vitamin D supplement. This can come in pill or liquid form and is usually a once per day dose. Most multivitamins contain some amount of Vitamin D, so make sure to read the labels of products you use or are considering. When all else fails, you can buy a bottle o f Vitamin D pills to help supplement your regimen.

The key is to simply make sure that you monitor the way you feel in order to gauge whether or not you have a Vitamin D deficiency. If you are constantly weak or fatigued, have trouble sleeping, suffer from mood swings, or have a weak immune response, then you might do well to take some extra Vitamin D on a daily basis. Even if you aren’t suffering from a deficiency, preventing cancer and autoimmune disease is enough reason to take a daily vitamin or supplement. It never hurts to be careful with your health and it is always better to be safe than sorry.
