Darla's POV
We were ready, finally. The day was here, all that hard work was going to pay off soon, it was dusk, the sun gone and the full moon up, but we'd have to wait until full dark to attack, while we wait, we feed. I tell them to take as much as they want, it would make them stronger, it would make them want to fight, to kill, not for the blood, just for the need of bloodshed, I drank especially most, though I didn't plan to fight. Merrick was though, and he drank almost as much as me, I could see the bloodlust building in him, he was clutching a railing in a death grip, looking away from the rest of the group, I could tell that it was all he could do to not attack one of the others. I admired his control, I knew he had the hardest time with it, because of that deep, dark, black hole that wanted to encase him in Darkness, it wanted to take over, to become the controller of him. I knew he wouldn't let that happen, or I hoped at least...
"Darla," He suddenly spoke, yet quietly, so only I can hear. "You never told me what Darkness is."
"Well, it's energy really, it's-" I'm cut off as we hear a howl come from behind us, I turned quickly, to see two newborns fighting, I calmly walked over and tore them off each other.
"If I see you fighting again, I will tear you apart myself." I growled, before turning to the others. "That goes for all of you, I want to see no fighting until it's time to attack, you will attack no one but the enemy. Got it?" I snapped. They nodded. "Good,"
"Darla," Merrick called again, I turned back to him. He points to the sky, which has darkened deeply.
I licked my lips, "It's time."
We move stealthily through the forest, which led to a big castle where Queen Azalea and the torture areas were. I halted them, seeing a party of vampires leaving it; I could see Azalea in the middle, dressed in dazzling jewels and fancy clothes. I could imagine it being me, protected from all sides, leading the biggest hunting party of the year, bathed in stunning jewelry and perfect clothes, or maybe sitting in my throne, looking bored, as my guards bring up yet another wrongdoer, to which I would shake my head in disapproval, and tell them to bring him to a torture chamber, where I'd deliver the cruelest of deaths. I sighed at the thought, when Merrick shook me from my fantasy.
"Focus," He whisper-snapped.
I narrowed my eyes, how dare he snap at me! If I didn't need him so much I'd kill him now, just for disrespecting me. I shook my head and looked back to the hunting party; they were a few steps from the perfect place to attack. I'd decided I'd give the death to Azalea, making it painful as possible, but quick, so no one could save her. I would rip off her limbs and then rip her head off, taking the fabulous crown that lay nestled in her perfect head of blond curls. How much better it'd look in my fiery hair, I think to myself, it would go perfectly. I take a breath, it was time to take the biggest and most fatal chance of all, and I would start it with one word.
"Now," I whispered, telling myself the word. But the others heard it, and attacked, luckily, the hunting party was in the perfect spot, and caught by surprise. The guardians and newborns fought, though there were twice as many newborns, along with extras, it was pretty even, the guardians had a lot of experience, and they managed to take down a few. That made the newborn even more furious, as they had to watch their friends go down. They fought twice as hard, and I stood there watching, impressed by the skill. Something caught my eye though. Merrick.
He was fighting with a dark burning rage I'd never seen in him before, he was taking down guardians so fast I thought he was going to finish it by himself. None of the guardians seem to be able to get a hit in, before they were down and dead. The other guardians tried to retreat to the castle, but the newborns got them. All that was left was Queen Azalea, who stood frozen at the edge of the battle. I'd ordered her left untouched. As soon as all the guardians were gone, Merrick went over to her, his eyes flaring the brightest red I've ever seen. I thought he was going to kill her, so I was about to protest, but he shoved her forward, towards me. She stumbled, and another shove and she was on her knees in front of me.
"Well," I said distastefully, "You're not the brave, beautiful, dangerous woman I always made you out to be," I scoffed. "Quite the opposite actually, you don't deserve the crown." She reached up and touched it, with fear in her eyes.
"Y-you can have it." She tried to untangle it, but it wouldn't come out.
"It doesn't matter if you just give it to me, they'll just get it back to you, you have to die."
She looked up at me with such fear I almost felt pity, but remembering what she did to my parents, my anger relights.
"Please don't kill me." She whispered. "Let me live."
I shook my head, an evil smile forming on my lips. "Why should I? I think it's only right that I do to you exactly what you did to my parents." She stared up at me, finally seeing.
"Oh no, Darla, no, no, you know I had to do it."
"No, no you didn't. And another thing, you did it in public, you let them die slowly in public, where everyone could watch, everyone could see how cruel you pretend to be." I said harshly.
"Darla..." She began.
"No, it's over." I jerked the crown out of her hair, she cried out in pain as her blond hair becomes streaked with red. I sighed.
"It won't be the death I wanted you to have, but it'll still be satisfying." I pulled her up by her hair, as she screamed in agony. I flicked out a lighter and lit her legs, she screamed and screamed, each one becoming more desperate and painful. It was music to my ears. The rest of the night was filled with her sweet screams and painful crying. Eventually it all went away.
The forest was quiet.
I was queen.
