-------------------------------------------------
Today’s Friday and after my afternoon lecture, I leave with my friend Roxy to go and get a coffee as we walk back to our homes. She lives a few roads down from me. I only flat share with Emily-she’s the only person I trust and can stand for longer than a day.
‘Hey Vicks.’ I hear a voice say. My favorite voice in the whole wide world.
‘Eddie!’ I say full of gleeful happiness. ‘Did you get all your work done?’
He nods and smiles at me and Roxy. ‘Eddie, this is Roxy. I don’t know if you’ve met before. Roxy, this is the wonderful Eddie, we kitchen shared last year.’ I say, gloating at the fact.
‘The wonderful Eddie, no, I haven’t.’ Roxy says gawping at him.
Eddie smiles ‘I don’t know about wonderful.’
Oh he is.
He chuckles at me, then says to Roxy ‘Well it’s lovely to meet you.’ He holds out his hand and shakes Roxy’s with the gentlest touch. ‘What are you doing this weekend?’ He asks her. Hmm, what about me?
‘Nothing.’ She replies.
‘But I thought…’ I begin ,but she jabs me in the ribs. Excuse me?
I look at her in disbelief as Eddie says ‘Do you want to go for a drink?’ to Roxy.
Roxy nods. She also looks at me to say don’t come.
I can’t move.
I can’t leave them to go for a drink without me.
I love Eddie. Not Roxy.
He’s mine and not hers.
I’ve loved him for a year and have been waiting patiently for him and…
Don’t you dare agree to go, Roxy.
‘See you soon, Vicks.’ Eddie says taking Roxy’s hand in his.
Roxy looks back and smiles genuinely. But she doesn’t know. No one knows I love Eddie except Emily and now, and now…
How can this be happening?
‘What’s up, Chick?’ I hear the dreaded voice say. Not now. Don’t talk to me or annoy me now.
‘Just don’t.’
Caesar laughs and says ‘What’s up?’ He looks at where I’m staring and says ‘Shit, but do you actually care? I mean, he’s nothing special, Chick.’
I walk on silently and Caesar isn’t too sure of what to do. ‘Um, Victoria, are you, are you ok?’
I say nothing and Caesar starts to worry ‘Right, let me take you home.’
‘No.’ I say.
‘What?’ He's confused.
‘I don’t want you to.’
‘It’s no problem.’
‘I said no.’ I stress.
He looks at me and scowls at me ‘Right, I’m now insisting you Looney Tune. I’m not leaving you near a busy street after what you saw.’
‘I said NO!’ I shout angrily. I start to walk away but Caesar grabs my arm and drags me back.
‘You’re coming with me.’
‘What? Are you going to abduct and rape me?’ I snap at him.
He looks fiercely angry and says ‘Shut it, smart mouth. I’m trying to help you out here, so just shut up.’
‘I don’t need your help.’ I say fighting back tears. I wipe my running nose on my arm and look upwards to stop the tears.
He looks at me and says calmly, slowly ‘Come on, let me take you home.’
He walks over to me and takes my hand for him to follow. I give in. He's not going to give up and I'm too weak to protest any longer. I nod and we walk on for a while in silence.
‘Is this yours?’ I ask when he stops abruptly at a motor bike, parked at the side of the road.
He nods.
It’s a gorgeous bike. The sound of old fashioned motor bikes makes me think of my favourite holiday sounds on the rocky streets and the engine harbouring away. Absolute bliss to me.
He hands me a helmet and a jacket then helps me into the gear. But before he slips the helmet over my head, he gently wipes my tears that have trickled down my cheek, away with his thumb. I’m frozen on the spot as he does this. Did he really just wipe my tears away as softly as a feather?
Apparently so.
His eyes catch mine, and then he pulls away. He puts the helmet on after flattening my hair down and shuts the flap. He gets on first then says ‘Well get on.’
‘You don’t need to do this. I’m fine, honestly.’
‘Oh get on the bloody bike, Chick.’
I sit on and Caesar says ‘Hold on.’
‘To what?’ I say flapping my arms about.
‘Me.’
‘No way.’
He turns around and bangs his helmet against mine by accident ‘Shit, seriously just hold onto me, will you?’
I reluctantly hold Caesar around his waist and link my fingers together. I can feel he’s got a toned body. Caesar speeds off quickly and I cling on tighter. He’s so quick and skilful. He zooms in and out of the traffic and rocks from left to right. I’ve never seen the roads like this before. It’s so different to being in a car with the wind blowing you back. This is my first time on a motor bike and I really like it!
But soon enough, we’re back at my place. I get off first, not dignified at all as I nearly fall off the bloody bike; then Caesar takes the stuff back. Surprisingly he gets off too. What is he doing? He’s not coming in. No no no.
‘Well, thanks.’ I say heading up to my door to get in.
He walks up behind me and says ‘It’s ok.’
‘You can go now.’
‘And you say I’m rude. Just let me come in and see you’re ok then I’ll go. Don’t worry, I won’t jump you or anything.’ He rolls his eyes and then follows me up to my home.
I knock on the door and Emily opens it ready to go out ‘Hey sweetie, hey, have you been crying?’
She knows me so well. The slightest tear that falls from my eyes, Emily will now. And vice versa.
In the presence of female company, I collapse in her arms and weep ‘Roxy went off with Eddie!’ I break down crying and Emily knows how heartbroken I am. She kneels down to my level and wraps her arms around me despite being in a tight body con dress which I’m sure is rising up her thighs.
‘Oh Tor, come on, let’s sit down and talk.’ I sit down and Emily looks at Caesar, who is standing by the door and she asks ‘Do you want to come in?’ over her shoulder.
Please say no.
‘Sure.’
Why? Does he take pleasure in my pain watching me cry? Satanist.
Caesar strolls through and sits on the egg chair and laughs ‘I always wanted one of these.’
Emily smiles and says ‘We’ve not met before, I’m Emily, best friend of Tori’s.’
He shakes her hand and says ‘Well I’m Caesar.’
Emily smiles then looks at me with her thumbs up. Seriously Emily now is not the time.
‘So, what happened? What did Roxy do now?’ She sits beside me on the sofa and curls her legs under her, wrapping a blanket around her. She would get a cold if she went out like that.
‘Eddie asked her out for a drink right in front of me.’ I say through batches of tears.
‘Oh Tor.’ She strokes my face then says ‘You should find out how he really feels, then move on.’
‘I don’t want to move on!’
Emily hugs me tightly on the sofa then says ‘Can I get you a drink, Caesar?’
Is he still here?
‘A water would be good, thanks.’
‘Water? No alcohol? I ask.
‘You think I’m an alcoholic, don’t you?’ He pushes his hair back and says ‘I got hung-over once; I don’t drink like that all the time.’
Well that silenced me.
There’s a knock at the door and Emily runs to get it, and then squeals when she sees who it is. Hayden.
Hayden comes in and sees me on the sofa looking very sorry for myself. Hayden’s gorgeous. Tall, tanned olive skin with short brown hair and pretty eyes. ‘What’s up Tori?’ He comes over to the sofa and gives me a hug and Emily sits on his lap as he does so.
‘Nothing.’ Emily says. She knows me so well.
‘Do you want to come out with us? I’ve discovered a new bar and that is why my lady looks so sexy.’ He kisses the back of Emily’s neck and she giggles. They are so in love I might die.
‘Come on, you can come too, mate.’ He says to Caesar.
Caesar looks at me and grins ‘I don’t know if Victoria would want me to come.’
I don’t even want to go, let alone with Caesar.
‘What’s your name?’ Hayden says. He is such a nice guy. He has so many genuine friends because he is so welcoming to them.
‘Caesar.’
‘Nice to meet you, I’m Hayden, Em’s boyfriend. Are you…?’
‘No.’ I say quickly as Hayden looks at me. No way is he my boyfriend. No way.
‘Come on, get into something a bit prettier and we’ll all go out and get merry. Are you up for that, Caesar?’
He nods and I feel like my death warrant has been signed. Not only am I mourning the loss of Eddie, I’m spending my Friday evening with someone who takes enjoyment in arguing with me. Brilliant. Bloody brilliant.
‘Get changed then, Tor.’ Em says grinning.
What are they trying to do with me? Set me up with him? No thank you.
I go into my room and Emily comes in jumping on my bed. ‘AHHHH! Oh my God, Tor! He is gorgeous! How did you meet him? Where did you find him! He has curly hair, you know my weakness is curly hair and he is SO hot…’
‘What? He is not-‘
She buts in ‘Oh yeah right.’ She laughs and says ‘He is beauuutiful, baby!’
I smile and say ‘You do have a boyfriend remember.’
‘And you don’t, so get a dress on, flash those legs and get over Eddie.’ Harsh talking or what!
My jaw drops and she realises the vital flaw she has made ‘Oh, ok, don’t get over Eddie, just have fun tonight then.’
I look in my wardrobe grumpily and Emily says ‘Oh cheer up, Grim Reaper. It’s not like I’m asking you to go out with a hot guy. Oh wait, I am! Seriously, he is so hot, Tor. Don’t you like him?’
‘No, I don’t.’
‘Why not? If I wasn’t with Hayden, he’d be right up my street.’
I roll my eyes and she hands me a new bra and a yellow dress. ‘Wear that. It looks so good on you. Hey and it’s bright, so you can’t mourn in it.’ She jokes.
‘Not funny.’
‘Just get dressed and forget about Eddie for tonight. Tomorrow we will talk about him ok? But tonight, we are going out and having fun with the sexy Caesar.’
‘I’m telling Hayden you said that.’
‘Be my guest.’ She smiles and I go and get changed into my dress and heels.
It’s at moments like these I wish I had a Narnia wardrobe where I could hide away and just disappear.
‘Come on slow coach!’ Emily yells.
I look around my room and see if there is a hiding place.
‘I’ll come in and dress you in a minute.’
And I know she would.
I look in my mirror and tame my curls and make my face look more presentable with a flash of foundation and some blusher and mascara. I pull away and stare at myself.
Hmm, I think I’m ready.
I scan the room one last time to see if there is no possible escape route.
Nope.
Damn I think I’m going to have to go.
