When Sparks Fly...Chapter 3
But that’s so long. Vic-tor-i-a. Chick is quick and even a little bit cute...Hope you like...love Phoebe Gardens!
Samantha-no, ask away! Inquisitiveness is good; all to help you understand the story better. I know, mad woman for not liking curls!
Laura-Beth-haha, you're like me then, Tor is like me, I can't bend paper or bend books, my friends say I don't read books, but peak at them because I hate creasing the spine. Yeah, terrible with directions too.
SK-you probably will find out later when I find a reason as to why he did! Lol! Remind me though! And ask away, I don't mind!
Zeviyane-I hope you saw my note on chp23 in the comments of I.C.B.H-you should post some stuff! I'll read it for sure.
Also, I'm English, so a 'fag', is a cigarette-I'll clear that up before you read!
Picture is of Caesar, the first one was too. Hope you like and please comment... Love Phoebe!*
---------------------------------------
I feel quite tired today. I couldn’t sleep. My insomnia has come back. My mind is just too imaginative for its own good. I chuck on my grey sweat shirt and slouchy jeans with heels and go to my lecture.
‘See you Emily.’ I call out.
‘Bye.’ She replies sleepily.
As I walk down the street and into uni, I spot the dishevelled Caesar strolling into the lecture room. Damn he’s going to beat me in there. I pick up my pace and walk in just behind him. I think I now have blisters forming. Why did I wear stupid heels to the lesson?
I then swerve around his body and jump into my seat. He looks at me with a confused expression.
‘Why were you heading for my seat?’ I ask breathlessly.
‘It’s not your seat, it’s the uni’s seat. You don’t own it.’ He says taking his satchel off.
‘Well it’s a known fact that I sit here, Lila sits there and Phil sits there actually.’
‘It’s pretty petty if you ask me, especially as I hand to practically hold your hand and walk you home last night. You should reward me for doing that.’
‘You did not hold my hand.’ I point out. I hope people aren’t listening or they seriously will think we are together.
He smiles sarcastically, then walks to the front and sits right in front of Debbie.
Suck up.
‘Morning all! Now, as I’ve told you before nearly every book has at least a hatch, match and dispatch in it, so for your homework, I’d like you to look into Shakespeare and talk about these themes.’
‘Um, what is a ‘hatch, match and dispatch?’’ Caesar asks.
‘A pregnancy, marriage and death-so research these themes and we’ll discuss them on Friday. You can all go off to do your research now.’ Debbie dismisses the class and everyone bolts, not to the library, but back to bed. I don’t know how they can go out binging each night.
I’m the last out of the class room and walk off to the canteen. I stand in line for a slice of cake and a coffee. When I get to the till, the grumpy old woman says ‘£3.45’ please; I feel the need to add.
I open my bag and look around for my purse. Hmm, it should be in here somewhere.
The till lady starts to tap her foot and I feel I might stamp on it if she continues.
‘Have you got the money or not?’ She says angrily. What a mean lady. Well at least I won’t be working in a canteen when I’m older. Well that was just spiteful Tori!
I look down in my bag again, when I see a £10 note flutter in front of me. I turn around to see Caesar waiting there with a packet of cigarettes in his hand ‘Here, and these’ He says hinting to the cigarettes. The cashier takes the money but I grab her hand and say ‘No no, it’s ok, I have the money.’
‘Come on, Chick, I’m dying for a fag.’
I turn around and look straight into his eyes ‘I’ve got the money.’ I say sternly.
‘Well where is it then? Please, just let me pay for now, or I am going to have to light up in here.’
'It's not my problem you've got a habit.'
He breathes deeply then says 'Please, just let me pay.'
The queue then starts groaning and I reluctantly give in and let him pay. As I take my cake and coffee, I follow Caesar outside who is already smoking and say ‘You didn’t need to do that.’
He looks up and blows to the side. ‘Well I didn’t want to wait until Christmas to smoke.’
‘Why do you smoke?’
He shrugs ‘Why not?’
‘Because it causes all horrible things like cancer, bad breath, smokers cough, yellow fingernails, I could go on.’
He sits down and says ‘Mm, I’m aware of that.’
I sit down next to him, curling my legs underneath me and tuck into my cake. It’s chocolate with butter icing. I crave chocolate when I need a pick me up.
‘Why do you eat chocolate?’ He asks.
‘Why not?’ Oh we’re having the conversation in reverse now. Clever.
‘Because it causes all horrible things like….’ He mocks.
‘No it doesn’t.’
‘It can make you obese.’
‘ARE YOU SAYING I’M FAT!’ I say astounded.
He smiles ‘No.’
‘You are, aren’t you?’ I instinctively pull my stomach in and sit up straight. How dare he!
‘I’m not that cruel.’ He says taking another drag.
‘You so are.’
‘You don’t know me.’
‘I don’t want to.’
He looks up and grins ‘Same. So what are you doing eating with me then?’
‘Well you did just pay for my cake and coffee.’
‘So? Its a few pounds, forget it.’
‘No no, you’ll hold it against me. I’m going to pay you back tomorrow.’
‘Don’t be stupid, I don’t want it back. I’m just satisfied I’m now smoking.’
‘Well I am, so end of.’
‘Whatever, Chick.’
‘Do you even know my name?’ I ask. I bet he doesn’t.
‘Why, don’t you?’ He says laughing to himself.
‘You are so immature.’
‘And you’re so old.’
‘So, do you?’
‘Yes, your name is Victoria Rainford.’
‘So why don’t you call me that?’
‘I prefer Chick.’ He says scanning the uni then looking back at me.
‘That’s so derogatory.’
‘So is babe, at least I’m saying you’re a chick instead of a babe.’
‘They’re pet names, you should just call me Victoria.’
‘But that’s so long. Vic-tor-i-a. Chick is quick and even a little bit cute.’
I smile ‘Do you think I’m cute?’
He leans closer and says ‘No, you’re not cute, the name is cute.’ He winks and stands up ‘I need to go home. I’ll see you around.’
‘I’ll give you your money soon.’
‘Whatever. Bye Chick.’
Seriously, why is he calling me that?
*
Later on that day, as we’re waiting for our second lecture, someone starts up the conversation ‘So, what age would you like to get married and have kids?’
All the guys groan but every girl bubbles in excitement. I love talking about this. It’s like a dream!
‘Tori, what about you?’ Lola asks.
I perk up and say ‘Well, ideally…’
They all laugh and say ‘Tor, you’ll make it happen, it’s you.’
Ahh, they’re so cute! They know me so well-because I will. I am that determined. I smile and continue ‘I’d like to be married by 24 and a child by 26 in a job I love, in a house outside London with another baby by 28. I’d like two children oh and a dog!’
They all nod in agreement. They then ask Caesar and he says ‘It’s a stupid discussion if you ask me.’
‘Why?’ Lola asks.
‘Well what if it doesn’t happen, you’re just going to end up disappointed and miserable, especially you.’ He says to me.
‘What?’ I reply.
‘If all that doesn’t happen to you, you will be dissatisfied with your life. You’ve planned your life out meticulously, so if it doesn’t happen, then you’re going to be heartbroken.’
‘No I won’t.’ I defend. I really won’t.
‘Liar!’ He says chuckling.
‘It will happen!’ I enthuse. ‘I’ll make it happen,’
‘By compromising your happiness, maybe.’ He retorts quickly.
‘Well I’ll be happier than you.’
He smiles at my attempt to annoy him. ‘If you say so.’
‘Do you even want to get married and have kids?’
‘No.’
‘Why not?’
‘Marriage is just a way of making you go home to that person who you thought you loved and actually don’t, but you're stuck with them forever and can't escape. That's why so many people cheat, they can't stand the monotony of the life they have with one person. 1 in 2 marriages end in divorce, so why bother? And I don’t want children.’
‘Well that’s awful!’
‘Why?’
‘Well, you have to want children and want to get married.’
‘No I don’t.’ He laughs and waits for my response.
I’m shocked. That answer actually hurts me and I’m puzzled as to why.
After the lesson, I’m still jaw dropped from what he said. First he insulted me but then he said he didn’t want marriage or children-who doesn’t? Isn’t that like everyone’s dream in life? It’s the top at my list. Yes I have a list-just so I can keep stuff in order. The top of my list is marriage.
Marrying Eddie!
We would be so cute together, both blonde but a brainy power couple. Dr Kershaw. Yes, isn’t it a beautiful surname? Kershaw. Mmm, Victoria Kershaw, sounds lovely, doesn’t it?
I walk into the canteen to get some lunch and see Eddie standing in the queue. I am so going there. Running there if possible! I jump in line and Eddie turns around smiling at me ‘Hey Vicks, long time no see.’ He leans down and kisses my cheek and I feel my knees might buckle under me. ‘How have you been?’
I grin giddily ‘Good thanks, you? Is it a lot tougher this year?’
He nods ‘It’s so much work. I’m shadowing, doing theory, practicing; I’m wondering if I’ll make it.’
‘Oh you will. I know you will.’
Eddie smiles and says ‘Go on, ladies first.’ Eddie steps behind me and puts his hands on either side on my waist to guide me.
I. Might. Die!
He holds onto my waist and rests his head on my shoulder ‘I’ve missed us all getting together. We should have a big meal out soon. Catch up and stuff.’
I nod. Did he really just say that?! ‘I’d really like that.’
‘What are you having? My treat.’ I grin delightedly and choose a fruit salad. ‘I wish I could be that healthy. I’ll have a sausage sandwich.’
‘Are you free this lunch?’
He shakes his head ‘Sorry, Vicks, I’m literally grabbing a sandwich and heading back to the lecture room.’
‘Oh, well that’s ok.’ Eddie pays for us both then leaves with a wave.
I wish he’d stay with me for longer.
I wish he knew how I felt.
I sit in the canteen munching alone when Emily plops down beside me. ‘Can I have a strawberry?’ She asks firstly.
‘Hey Tor, how’s your day been? Oh ok, thanks, you?’
She smiles sarcastically and says ‘I was getting there.’
‘I just saw Eddie.’ I sigh.
‘And?’
‘He held my waist and paid for my lunch.’
‘Well that’s nice.’ She says nudging my side.
‘Why can’t he tell I love him?’ I question.
‘Why don’t you just tell him you love him?’
‘Ok, I know I’m blunt and stuff, but I don’t mess with love and you know why, if a guy likes you, he will tell you.’
‘It’s been over a year.’
‘He might not know yet, these things take time. We can’t all be lucky like you.’ Emily has been with her boyfriend Hayden for three years. They met in sixth form and went to the same uni too. He doesn’t live with us, well, maybe he does, he is always around there, but he doesn’t pay. I like him though. He’s a great guy and Emily is besotted with him.
She rests her head on her hand and smiles ‘Oh, I wonder what he’s doing now?’
I inwardly groan at how fortunate Emily is to have someone like Hayden, or as a matter of fact, anyone.
I’m not asking a lot here, just for Eddie to like me in that way.
Please?
I don’t know who I’m asking this to, but I really would like him. So if anyone's listening, be nice and grant me my wish...
