Afterwards, we lay together, completely naked under the night-sky. Unlike before, I didn’t feel one bit self-conscious by my nudeness. I felt…loved, and…wanted.
He held me to his chest, the faint chirping of crickets providing a sort of comforting silence in the night. He stroked my hair back from my face tenderly, and I smiled at him, and his thumb moved to brush over my lips. ‘I love you,’ he whispered, his dark blue eyes smouldering in the dark. ‘I love you so much.’
‘I love you too,’ I reached up my hand and tugged at his hair, pulling his face down to mine in a kiss that left me breathless.
----------------------
Days passed and Mateo and I were as strong as ever. But there was something about his mood, a sort of reserved quietness, that put me on edge, had me tensing at every shuffle or movement he made, preparing for the worst. I wasn’t sure why, but I supposed that my instincts that were closer to the surface than any other human was rising higher up.
Dan wasn’t really speaking to me or even acknowledging my existence, well, that was if you didn’t count the very pointedly shot glares he sent my way. But if I was being honest, I really didn’t give a damn. Originally, I had thought it was in my best interest to have a human friend, but I had Mateo, and that was more than enough for me.
Jenna Thompson didn’t pester Mateo anymore, not really. But I would catch her scowling at me at least a dozen times every school day. But that didn’t bother me, either – hey, for all I cared, Jenna and Dan could hook-up and I’d just be thankful that they’d stop with the dirty looks.
Everything seemed totally fine.
I should have known that it would all come crashing down.
----------------------
‘Matt,’ I said one day when we were walking home from school. ‘Have you ever…ever had a…a…a girlfriend before me?’
This question had been bothering me ever since we...well, you know. I decided that I might as well ask and get it over and done with, and I was going to force myself not to care if the answer wasn't what I wanted to hear
His eyes lit up in amusement, and I felt heat spread to my cheeks. ‘Why?’
I shifted uncomfortably. 'Just wondering.'
'Okay. Well, there were two before you.'
‘Really?’ I couldn’t help the jealousy that snapped and snarled inside of me. ‘Who were they?’
He smiled teasingly at me, and we turned into an alleyway. ‘Jealous, huh?' This fact seemed to please him, but he kept a straight face and continued on when I glared at him. 'The first one was Rebecca, a girl I met while fighting war in Calypso Valley. She was lonely and lustful. Though it’s more accurate to say she was a fling then a girlfriend.
‘The other one was Rozalina. I met her while fighting war in Junio Valley. Ironically enough, she was the sister of one of Leion’s greatest enemies. And yes, it was more of a fling, and very, very brief.’
My jealousy thickened, strengthened, until I was almost choking on my feelings. ‘Did you…did you have…?’ I could not finish the sentence.
He grinned as we came to the end of the alleyway. ‘Did I have sex with them? I’m not going to lie to you. I slept with them.'
I flinched at the way he phrased it. Those girls were probably a lot more experienced then I was. It made me cringe to think that Mateo probably could have compared me to them.
‘But Kaia,’ he took my face into his hand tenderly, and stared deep into my eyes. ‘I never loved them.’
My heart softened. ‘Really?’
He leaned in and planted a soft, sweet kiss on my lips. He tasted delicious. ‘Really.’
I had no problem with starting a make-out session right there, and I even reached out my hands and thrust them into his hair, but he gently untangled them from his locks. I pouted.
‘Hey, this is where I leave you. We wouldn’t want Selene to find out about us, would you?’
I blinked and looked around us. Sure enough, my house was only just on the other side of the alleyway. If a member of my coven looked directly straight out of the living room window, then there was no doubt about it that we would be caught.
I sighed and reluctantly stepped away from him.
‘But just before you go,’ he said, and the devilish glint in his eyes was a split-second warning. He grabbed me and dragged my body to his, until every inch of us was pushing against the other. His lips came down on mine hard, my lips moulding to his as his tongue coaxed open my lips and slid inside my mouth. I moaned and slid my hand back into his hair, stroking the silk texture between my fingers. He growled pleasurably as I tugged on his hair, and I smiled against his lips.
Eventually, and it could have been minutes or hours – I honestly didn’t know – he pulled away, and I groaned and tried to pull him back to me. ‘You can’t just do something like that and then stop.’
He grinned and pressed his lips to my ear. ‘Just something to keep you going until tomorrow.’
And then I felt a cool breeze press into me in the places his body-warmth had previously occupied. I opened my eyes, and he was gone.
-------------------
‘Selene!’ I called out as I slammed shut the door behind me. ‘I’m home!’
I bustled into the kitchen and plopped down my school bag on the breakfast table. I was surprised to see Selene standing by the window, looking at me with an expression that made me blurt out, ‘Selene, what’s wrong? What’s happened?’
She breathed deeply for a few seconds and closed her eyes, her flawless face glowing in the light streaming through the kitchen window. When she opened her eyes, her dark brown irises stared at me with decades years of knowledge. ‘I know, Kaia,’ she whispered. ‘I know about you and him.’
