‘See? They like you.’ Mateo said as soon as we were out of the house.

I deliberated over that statement, and had to agree with him. They did seem to like me. ‘You’re right,’ I admitted. ‘But I don’t think that Zack guy does.’

Mateo pursed his pouty lips and gave an eye roll. ‘Don’t worry about him. He’s just…torn up at the moment.'

I frowned. 'Why?'

'He...he’s in love with Lydia.’

‘Lydia is…one of the girls’ in your coven.’

‘Yeah,’ Mateo said as he took my hand and helped me jump over the fence, even though I didn’t need any. ‘He doesn’t want to ruin their friendship.’

‘So Lydia doesn’t like Zack back?’ I asked, marvelling at how something as supernatural as a coven of Aloysiuses’ could be faced with everyday love life situations.

‘She doesn’t know what he feels for her,’ Mateo told me as we squeezed in our stomachs for the kissing gate.

I frowned. ‘So why doesn’t he just tell her how he feels?’

Mateo rolled his eyes. ‘Because he’s too scared that she’ll freak out about it.’

‘Aww.’ I sympathised. ‘Poor Zack.’

Mateo pouted and swiftly leaned into me and pressed his lips to mine. ‘Hey, what about me? I always liked you.’

I pursed my lips and squeezed his hand playfully. ‘You didn’t really hide what you felt for me, Matt. Actually, you seemed to have a habit off pushing me into the wall in front of everybody and doing that Heater charm thingy to me.’

He grinned devilishly. ‘You know you liked it, baby.’

I flushed and turned my head away from him. ‘Did not,’ I muttered.

‘Did, too.’

‘Did not.’ I huffed.

‘Did, too.’

‘DID NOT!’

‘DID, TOO!’

‘DID -!’ He cut me off with a hard, passionate kiss, one that made my toes curl and my hands ball into fists on his shoulders as he pulled me tightly into his arms.

When he finally freed my mouth, his lips trailed all the way down to my ear. I shivered.

‘Did, too.’ He whispered.

I didn’t disagree.

-------------------------

When I got home, my nose was assaulted by the scent of something burning. I cringed as my eyes watered, and I could hear sizzling.

It must mean Selene was cooking.

I quickly rushed into the kitchen, slinging my coat up on the hook on the way, to find Selene looking very alarmed as the frying pan of sausages she was holding spat violently at her. When she saw me standing in the doorway, she blew out a sigh of relief. ‘Kaia!’ she gestured for me to come closer, and I did, reluctantly.

‘Um, Selene?’ I said, wincing as a splatter of oil hit me smack on the arm. ‘What exactly are you trying to do?’

She hurriedly turned off the heat on the cooker, and let out a sigh of relief when the fury of the spitting oil died down. ‘Well, I was trying to make sausages and eggs. But it didn’t really…’

‘Work out well,’ I finished for her, taking the pan in my hand and up-turning its contents into the bin.

Selene’s speciality might have been Macaroni Cheese, but when it came to anything else, she was as hopeless as a snail. I never knew how she learned to make an actual dish, and I never knew where, either, because whenever I asked her, she would just pretend she couldn’t hear me, or ask me a question. And then I stopped asking, seeing as I seemed to be offending her.

Selene sighed again and pushed a few strands of stray hair back from her face. Then she glanced at me, and a small smile appeared on her pale pink lips. ‘I almost forgot – how’d your date go?’

I thought of Mateo’s coven, of how lunch had gone a lot smoother then I had thought it would. I grinned. ‘Great.’

Her smile got wider. ‘That’s nice, Kaia. I’m happy for you.’

I took out a stool from beneath the breakfast table and perched on the end. ‘Yeah, he’s amazing.’

‘Really?’ She put the pan in the sink before getting out another stool and sitting opposite me. ‘What’s he like?’

‘Oh, he’s amazing,’ I said. I was glad that I could talk to Selene about Mateo, even if she didn’t know the exact identity of who I was talking about. ‘He’s funny and he’s kind, and he has a temper and he’s sweet and he’s just…’ I smiled dreamily. ‘He’s just…just perfect.’

She smiled again, and in her eyes I saw…sadness? ‘Maybe I could meet him sometime. Maybe he could come here for lunch or dinner or something.’

I froze, and I automatically started thinking of excuses. Oh, I’m sorry, he had a rare disease that can be caught by supernaturals…Um, he’s mourning his mother’s death…His father’s taken him on a round-the-world cruise and he won’t be back until you’ve long forgotten him.

‘Oh, Okay.’ Oh, for God’s sake, Kaia, have you no common sense? ‘That would be Awesome.’ Apparently not.

-------------------------

‘She wants you to come and meet my coven!’ I said to Mateo, pacing back and forth. ‘I…I am freaking out.’

It was just approaching night time, and me and Mateo were sitting in our special place in the nearby forest, the part secluded from everything else. The sky was beautiful, cobalt blue streaking through the murkier, darker blue. My mood, however, could not be described as quite so pretty.

‘Kaia, Kaia,’ Mateo soothed, standing up from where he was previously sitting on the ground to come and put his arms around my waist. I was glad; I needed someone to hold me.

I buried my head in his shoulder, and he planted kisses on my neck, all the while soft, rhythmic purrs rumbled from deep within his chest.

A casual, comforting embrace between a girlfriend and a boyfriend became so much more.

I looked up at him, and in the darkening sky he looked even more beautiful than usual, more surreal. As if he was a dream.

‘Kaia,’ he whispered, his face moving closer to mine. ‘Kaia…’

And then his lips were on mine, soft and coaxing and gentle and passionate and just everything I had ever dreamed of. My arms snaked around his neck as one of his hands crept up to the small of my back, while the other was tangled in my hair, holding me to him.

‘Matt,’ I moaned against his lips. ‘Matt.

We slowly sank to the ground, and I straddled Mateo’s hips as he leaned back into the ground.

I smoothed his hair away from his face, taking in every angle, every plane. I stroked his cheekbones, leaned down to kiss his cheeks, his eyelids, his lips.

From where he was lying beneath me, his eyes followed my every movement, and then when I turned to look directly into his eyes, I caught my breath at how beautiful he looked, how flawless and perfect. He smiled, that small smile, the one where one side of his lip pulled up, and he looked young and vulnerable and sweet and…and he looked like him.

He suddenly rolled me over so that he was positioned on top of me instead, and he leaned down and kissed me, and as his lips moved against mine, soft and coaxing and warm, I moaned and arched against him, my hands coming up to tangle in his hair.

‘Kaia,’ he whispered against my lips. ‘I love you.’

I murmured something in reply, but I couldn’t be sure of what it was, when his hands trailed down to my tank top, and his eyes caught mine, asking, begging, pleading.

I nodded slowly, silently accepting what I knew I could never go back on, but what I didn’t care to lose with the right person. He was perfect, and our moment would be perfect, too. I was his. I belonged to him – no one else.

He hurriedly pulled my top over my head, and his breath caught.

I moved my hands to his t-shirt, and he lifted his muscled arms up so that I had better access in taking the offending piece of clothing off of him. My hands rubbed his muscled torso while our breathing, hard and ragged and loud, was the only sound to be heard in the background.

He quickly ripped off my trousers, while my hands fiddled with the fly of his jeans and pushed them down. Once I had finished taking off his jeans, he looked down at me and kissed the valley between my breasts. ‘Kaia, you are so beautiful.’

I smiled shyly. ‘So are you.’

He chuckled, and just before reaching for my panties, he glanced at me and I smiled wider. His eyes suddenly became hooded, secretive, and before I had time to wonder what he was doing, his finger slipped inside my panties, and then slid inside me.

I gasped and bucked against him, wanting more of the torturous pleasure. He finger rubbed against the inside of me excruciatingly slowly while he stared at me with that small, seductive smile, and I moaned and buried my face in his shoulder. ‘Faster,’ me voice was muffled by his skin. ‘Faster.’

But he didn’t go faster, if anything, it became even slower. I became wet around his finger, and when he finally slid it out of me, I was mortified to see that it looked as if he had just plunged his hand into a bucket of water.

But he only grinned at me, and his hands moved to my back, and then there was a click, and my bra came undone.

I was especially self-conscious about that part of my body, since I knew they weren’t nearly big enough, but Mateo seemed not to mind. In fact, when he peeled my bra off of me and threw it half way across our secluded spot, he growled deeply, the sound so low it could have been mistaken for the snarl of a wolf. And then he dipped his head down to my chest and took my breast in his mouth. I gasped and clutched at his head, wanting more and more of the feelings he was making me drown in. His tongue moved against my nipple, and I moaned when he flicked it with his tongue. ‘Oh,’ I groaned. ‘Oh.’

My hands tugged at his silky hair, needing to hold onto him, just needing him And then he was taking off his boxers, flinging them away from him, and his face was level with mine again, and we were looking at each other, loving each other, blue connected to blue.

‘Don’t hurt me.’ I whispered.

‘Never,’ he replied fiercely.

And then he pushed inside of me. At first I felt a pain, a pain too big to really feel. But them, after a few moments of him fitting inside of me, tailing along came a pleasure so intense that I cried out, bucked against him and murmured his name over and over again.

‘Oh, Kaia,’ he whispered, and caught my lips in a dazzling kiss. ‘Kaia.’

It was a night I would never forget. A night that I knew I should never speak of aloud. Whether the comparison may be black with white, dark with light, lock with key – it was truly opposites coming together.
