What Type of Wood is Best for Your Corner Bookcase?

Choosing a corner bookcase can be difficult. It helps to know which woods are the best for bookcases but ultimately you just want to get a kind that will match the general decor of the room you're designing for.
There are a lot of people out there today that are either going and buying or staying home and building a corner bookcase that they would like to put in one of their rooms. As an expert on corner bookcases I am asked constantly what type of wood is best to use when building a corner bookcase and what types of wood to look for in a corner bookcase when you’re thinking about buying one.

There is no simple answer to this question. There is a huge variety of woods out there and some carpenter or wood crafter inevitably has tried to make a bookcase or bookshelf out of one type of wood or the other. It becomes difficult to determine what the best wood is for a particular bookcase because not all bookcases are made for the same purpose or the same room.

The quick and easy answer is that you should find the type of wood that best matches your room’s décor. If you have mostly dark wood in your living room where you’re thinking of putting a corner bookcase, you’re probably going to want to have another dark wood piece. The opposite is true if the room you’re looking for is full of light colors or light colored woods. You have to try and tailor the bookcase choice so that it meets the requirements of the room.

As a rule of thumb I generally like to first decide on the color of the piece and then determine which woods are the best qualities for that particular color. You can also keep in mind that a wood can always be painted or stained, so maybe if you’re planning to paint the bookcase once you have it in the room you can just decide on the quality of the wood first.

For the lighter variety of woods I’m particular to an oak corner bookcase. Oak is a sturdy and reliable timber and it can be used to craft a variety of different furniture pieces. My favorite scene in the movie Pulp Fiction revolves around oak furniture and I even have a room in my house designed around the oak room that I think the Wolf purchased for Quentin Tarantino in the film. I’m an oak man, so I’m a little biased but I feel like it is one of the best types of wood on the market for furniture.

You might prefer going with mahogany. A mahogany corner bookcase is great for those dark color palettes. If you have a lot of dark furniture in the room or you’ve got a lot of cherry woods or deep brown woods, a mahogany bookcase would look perfect. It is also an incredibly sturdy wood and so it will last you a long time.

Just try and browse as many corner bookcases as you can and choose the wood that best matches the style of your room. As long as you don’t buy really cheap quality wood for your bookcase you’ll be in good shape if it matches your décor.
