What to Do When Bored at Work
Ah yes, it does get to a point like that at the workplace when there's no attention being paid to the work at hand and nothing else seems interesting either. Then? Then what is one to do to drive the boredom away? Read the following article for some ideas...

If your workplace is anything like mine then I can say with surety that there is bound to be that bout of boredom which will set in and refuse to leave, try as you might. Why? 'Coz our office has no Facebook, no blogs and no mails...which can only mean that there is very little left to entertain ourselves with ...or so I used to think. And then I threw that thought out of the window and got a little innovative. That's when I came up with some really awesome ways to get the boredom out and running far, far away. Want to know what I did and what to do when bored at work? Read up.
What to Do When You're Bored at Work
I'm not beating around the bush anymore. Let's just get you those fun things to do when bored at work:
- Get someone to call one of your colleagues while they are deep, deep in their work. Say that they've been called by the management immediately into the head office. They'll rush out all confused. Meanwhile you perfect your 'holier than thou face'. Of course there is nothing there for them, so when they come back all pissed, you simply sympathize (and snigger to yourself).
- Go over to your colleague's desk and start chatting to them about random things. Then mid sentence just completely tune out, contort your face like you're concentrating on something and ask...'Can you hear that'. They'll obviously say it's nothing. Then go back to your conversation and repeat the same thing again. Make sure to keep your face as straight as possible.
- Wear these really squeaky pair of shoes and when the office is relatively quiet, start walking with the squeaky shoes. Apologize profusely and then repeat the same thing 2-3 more times for good measure.
- If you share your work space with a colleague, this is absolutely a fun way to confuse them, drive your boredom away and get a few laughs in. Keep staring at them till the point they get visibly uncomfortable. Then when they turn around to look at you make a funny face (like make buck teeth and look at them). Unexpected.
- Swivel around in your swivel chair...if you have a swivel chair.
- Tie a piece of string to a dollar sign and keep the ends of the string in your hands. Then plant the note in a corner somewhere and wait for your bait. When someone sees the note and bends down to pick it up, you pull the string and get the note away. Do it until they can figure out what's going on. The best thing about this one is that you can do this with so, so many people! (Unless the word gets out!)
- Get a mug of coffee and then go on to sip and slurp it noisily.
- Stand behind a colleague's desk and stare at their screen. In silence. Without saying anything. It'll freak them out.
- Stand near the main entrance of the office door and open the door for whoever walks in. For added measure, salute everyone who walks by. Crazy little thing to do when you're bored.
- Doodle on a piece of paper and then stick it on your board for everyone to see.
- Write funny and witty messages all over your message board and spread a few laughs.
- Gather a group of friends and sit in the corridor. When one of your colleagues passes by, all of you simply stare at him/her without saying a word.
- Visit some funny sites and go through the material. That will lighten your mood more.
- Pick a random annoying little tune of a very old, quaint song and start humming it. Then visit every desk in the office and hum it for them. Ask them if they can identify it. This is definitely some of the most useless stuff to do when you're bored.
OK so it doesn't just have to be the fun and crazy things to do when bored at work, you can also indulge in something productive. Like what? What to do when bored at work? Something that is productive? Here are some options that you can look:
- Organize your desk and computer and get rid of all the useless junk that has been stored on it for ages.
- Help a colleague with a problem.
- Keep a stress ball in your drawer and go nuts squeezing it. It'll get rid of the stress and pent up tension and help you energize.
- If you have a play area, then go play a game or something similar. You'll feel fresh again.
- Ask your boss if there is any extra work for you to do. (I know, I know!)
- Think of some event that is coming up in the company and make a list of all the things that need to be organized for it. It'll take your mind off work.
