What - Manmade Diamonds?
Some ranting about manmade diamonds.
Diamonds have a long history, filled of greed, suffering and passionate love. It’s a unique stone processed by nature through millions of years under strong pressure and high temperature.
Diamond mining has raised crime rates in areas where they extract diamonds as it awakens human greed.
Diamonds have also had a large role in declaring love for a person. It is often given to the person we choose to share our life with, as a symbol of long lasting love.
However; today; we don’t exclusively get diamonds from mining, but there have been an increasing development in technology which let us grow diamonds in laboratories. There are several methods used for this. The one being closest to natural diamonds is to put carbon under high pressure, and high temperature. By doing this we are able to grow diamonds within a couple of weeks compared to the natural diamonds being created during million of years under pressure and high temperature.
Another commonly used method is to change the structure of raw materials like carbon, and change the structure atom by atom till it has the structure of a diamonds.
The larger question that comes now that we are able to grow diamonds is: are the diamonds grown in laboratories equally worth to a natural diamond? In monetary value; the man made diamonds will probably be worth less then natural diamonds. But as quality; even the jeweler will have problem telling them from each other without running extensive tests to declare it’s not a real diamond.
There are also advantages of getting manmade diamonds as we have the possibility to decide both quality and color of the diamond prior creating it. On the other hand; some of the charm with natural diamonds is that they aren’t perfect, and have been created over so long period of time by nature itself.
I still think manmade diamonds at least should be used for machinery and technological advancement. But for jewelry? I haven’t really managed to get a good opinion; I find it charming to give something that is created by nature through natural processes over long time, and later processed by jewelers to become nice jewelry. I find this appealing and charming as a gift; but again; it has a blood history with abuse of labor, high crime rights etc. Do I really want support abuse of people and crime rates? If it is grown in laboratory I have at least a clean conscious mind that this product did not come to my hand by suffering of other people.
