What is the Impact of Technology on Our Society?

How has technology affected society? How has it influenced life? Read on to know the impact of technology on society.
When we speak of the impact of technology on society, we always talk about the positive effects of technology and about how technology has made life easy. We talk about the Internet as an information resource and a communication platform and conveniently ignore the fact that an overexposure to it leads to Internet addiction. We often discuss how technology has made life easy but easily forget that it has made us overly dependent on it. Have you thought of the impact of technology from this point of view? I am sure, most of you haven't. Let us look at this aspect of technology here.

Impact of Technology on Our Society
Think of the days when there were no computers and no modern means of transport. Human life was highly restricted due to the unavailability of technological applications. Daily life involved a lot of physical activity. Life of the common man was not as luxurious as that of modern times, but he was more active. Exercise was integrated into routine physical activities. It was contrary to the sedentary lifestyle of today, which leaves no time for exercise and fills days with inactivity and laze. Today we don't want to, and thanks to the advancement of technology, don't even need to walk, move around, or exert ourselves physically to great extents in order to get things done. We have the world at our fingertips.

We think of technology as a boon to society. I am afraid; it's not completely a boon. The Internet has bred many unethical practices, like hacking, spamming and phishing. Internet crime is on the rise. The Internet, being an open platform lacks regulation. There is no regulation on the content displayed on websites. Internet gambling has become an addiction for many. Overexposure to the Internet has taken its toll. In this virtual world, you can be who you are not, you can be virtually living even after you die. Isn't this weird? Children are spending all their time playing online and less or almost no time playing on the ground. Youngsters are spending most of their time social networking, missing on the joys of real social life.

Think of the days when there were no online messengers, no emails, and no cell phones. Indeed cellular technology made it possible for us to communicate over wireless media. Web communication facilities have worked wonders in speeding long-distance communication. On the other hand, they have deprived mankind of the warmth of personal contact. Emails replaced handwritten letters and communication lost its personal touch. With the means of communication so easily accessible, that magic in waiting to reach someone and the excitement that followed have vanished.

Moreover, we have become excessively dependent on technology. Is so much of dependency good? Is it right to rely on machines to such an extent? Is it right to depend on computers rather than relying on human intellect? Computer technology and robotics are trying to substitute for human intellect. With the fast advancing technology, we have started harnessing artificial intelligence in many fields. Where is the digital divide going to take us? How is our 'tomorrow' going to be? 'Machines replacing human beings' does not portray a rosy picture, does it? It can lead to serious issues like unemployment and crime. An excessive use of machines in every field can result in an under-utilization of human brains. Over time, we may even lose our intellectual abilities. You know of the declining mathematical abilities in children due to use of calculators since school, don't you?

The impact of technology on society is deep. It is both positive and negative. Technology has largely influenced every aspect of living. It has made life easy, but so easy that it may lose its charm one day. One can cherish an accomplishment only if it comes after effort. But everything has become so easily available due to technology that it has lost its value. There is a certain kind of enjoyment in achieving things after striving for them. But with everything a few clicks away, there is no striving, there's only striking. With the developments in technology, we may be able to enjoy all the pricey luxuries in life but at the cost of losing its priceless joys.

Jackson gave a 90-minute interview to Oprah Winfrey on February 10, 1993, his second television interview since 1979. He grimaced when speaking of his childhood abuse at the hands of his father; he believed he had missed out on much of his childhood years, admitting that he often cried from loneliness. He denied tabloid rumors that he had bought the bones of the Elephant Man, slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, or bleached his skin, stating for the first time that he had vitiligo. Dangerous re-entered the album chart in the top 10, more than a year after its original release.[30][101][157]

In the summer of 1993, Jackson was accused of child sexual abuse by a 13-year-old boy named Jordan Chandler and his father, Dr. Evan Chandler, a dentist.[167][168][169] The Chandler family demanded payment from Jackson, and the singer initially refused. Jordan Chandler eventually told the police that Jackson had sexually abused him.[170] Dr. Chandler was tape-recorded discussing his intention to pursue charges, saying, "If I go through with this, I win big-time. There's no way I lose. I will get everything I want and they will be destroyed forever... Michael's career will be over". Jordan's mother was, however, adamant at the time that there had been no wrongdoing on Jackson's part.[169] Jackson later used the recording to argue that he was the victim of a jealous father whose only goal was to extort money from the singer.[169]

In August 1993, Jackson's home was raided by the police who, according to court documents, found books, and photographs in his bedroom featuring young boys with little or no clothing.[171] In December 1993, Jackson was strip searched.[172] Jordan Chandler had reportedly given police a description of Jackson's intimate parts, and the strip search revealed that Jordan had correctly claimed Jackson had patchy-colored buttocks, short pubic hair, and pink and brown marked testicles.[172] Reportedly, Jordan had also previously drawn accurate pictures of a dark spot on Jackson's penis only visible when his penis was lifted.[173] This dark spot was corroborated by the sheriff's photographer[174] and the District Attorney in affidavits.[175]

Jackson's friends said he never recovered from the humiliation of the strip search. The investigation was inconclusive and no charges were ever filed.[176] Jackson described the search in an emotional public statement, and proclaimed his innocence.[167][172][177] On January 1, 1994, Jackson settled with the Chandlers out of court for $22 million. A Santa Barbara County grand jury and a Los Angeles County grand jury disbanded on May 2, 1994 without indicting Jackson,[178] after which time the Chandlers stopped co-operating with the criminal investigation around July 6, 1994.[179][180][181] The out-of-court settlement's documentation specifically stated Jackson admitted no wrongdoing and no liability; the Chandlers and their family lawyer Larry Feldman signed it without contest.[182] Feldman also explicitly stated "nobody bought anybody's silence".[183] A decade after the fact, during the second round of child abuse allegations, Jackson's lawyers would file a memo stating that the 1994 settlement was done without his consent.[180]

In May 1994, Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Ann Wagner. They had first met in 1975, when a seven-year-old Presley attended one of Jackson's family engagements at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, and were reconnected through a mutual friend.[184] According to a friend of Presley's, "their adult friendship began in November 1992 in L.A."[185] They stayed in contact every day over the telephone. As the child molestation accusations became public, Jackson became dependent on Presley for emotional support; she was concerned about his faltering health and addiction to drugs.[186] Presley explained, "I believed he didn't do anything wrong and that he was wrongly accused and yes I started falling for him. I wanted to save him. I felt that I could do it."[187] She eventually persuaded him to settle the allegations out of court and go into rehabilitation to recover.[186]

Jackson proposed to Presley over the telephone towards the fall of 1993, saying, "If I asked you to marry me, would you do it?"[186] They married in the Dominican Republic in secrecy, denying it for nearly two months afterwards.[188] The marriage was, in her words, "a married couple's life... that was sexually active".[189] At the time, the tabloid media speculated that the wedding was a ploy to prop up Jackson's public image.[188] The marriage lasted less than two years and ended with an amicable divorce settlement.[190] In a 2010 interview with Oprah, Presley admitted that they spent four more years after the divorce "getting back together and breaking up", until she decided to stop.[191]

Once there was a very normal guy named Smenen that lived a very normal life style. He lived with his parents even though he was old enough to get his own place and drink. He was more of a laid back guy. Till one day his mom got tired of his attitude and that he wasn’t providing money to the house. It wasn’t only with his mom that he had problems with, but with people from the streets that he owed money to because he used a lot of drugs. He smoked weed on a daily bases. Due too the poor community he lived in. One day he experiences a drive by, by a much known guy to the police department. Luckily he didn’t get hurt but like any mother would do, she sent him with his cousin Poncho in the East Bay in the City of Hayward.
Once he got to the airport his cousin was there to pick him up. He was in a 1985 Monte Carlo Super Sport . It was a shiny black that shined so much that it could blind you from the reflection, As Smenen saw Poncho pull up to where he was waiting he greeted him with a handshake and a hug. He quickly noticed that they were very different; he noticed that Poncho was very neat. And he dressed baggy. So when they were driving back to Ponchos place he noticed that his neighborhood was a very friendly one. When they got out the car this pretty Latina girl came up to where the cousins were and surprised poncho and got him from the back. Hugging poncho she looked happy while smenen was staring at her with his mouth open he said DAM! She looked at him and said “are you smenen?” and he replied “yes” she Looked at Poncho and said “babe omg I didn’t know your cousin was coming.” Then Poncho said “oh yea sorry it was sudden, he had problems at his hometown but were going to change his ways huh smenen?” Poncho said looking at him. And Smenen looking down answered “hum yea I guess” They got too the front door of the apartment and opened he door. Smenen eyes got huge. He hadn’t seen a place so neat in his life. Poncho showed him to his room. The next day Smenen woke up and walked all over the apartment and couldn’t find anybody so he went to take a walk to the park and relax. Smenen had never really just sat down and looked at the sky or listened carefully to the sound and the view of the world. He liked it, the smell of the fresh air in the morning and the green grass and the little kids playing in it. It reminded him of the days. Well when he had a family. He had a family, a wife and a son. But a bad day in the hood made him lose everything. Some people started fighting in front of the apartment complex where he lived and fired shots went threw the walls hitting his wife and son. When that flash back went threw his mind tear drops fell from his cheek to the floor. So this little girl went up to him and said “sir why are you crying?” before he answered the little girls mom came running saying sorry for my little girl bothering you. He replied saying “no she wasn’t bothering me at all hah ashes just concerned why I was crying” The mom was a mid height women with dark curly hair, shiny white teeth and big lips that looked as red as a cherry. He immediately said “hey watz gewd?” she blushed and said “nothing” while looking down and playing with her hair. Her cheeks blushed a bright red. He said “so does your little girl have a father?” “No he left us” she said. So he smiled and said “have you had lunch?” So they started talking for a while. It’s been a month since they have been talking as best friends. He wanted to move a step forward in their relation ship bit he didn’t know if she liked him like that. He would ask poncho and his girlfriend if he should get with her or if she might like him? They both said it’s obvious that both of us like each other. I mean why not get together, were both nice people. So he went to her house, as soon as he opened the door the little girl jumped and hugged him and called him daddy the mom and him stared at each other with an awkward look. He walked towards her and told her “hi i just came to ask u a question that I wanted to tell you

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (pronounced: [?a'ki?a isa'ßel meßa'?ak ri'pol]; born February 2, 1977),[2] (English /??'k??r?/)[3] is a Colombian singer-songwriter, dancer, record producer, choreographer, and model. Born and raised in Barranquilla, she began performing in school, demonstrating Latin, Arabic, and rock and roll influences and belly dancing abilities. Shakira released her first studio albums, Magia and Peligro, in the early 1990s, failing to attain commercial success; however, she rose to prominence in Latin America with her major-label debut, Pies Descalzos (1996), and her fourth album, Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998).

Shakira entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service (2001). Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever", became the best-selling single of 2002. Her success was solidified with her sixth and seventh albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), the latter of which spawned the best-selling song of the 21st century, "Hips Don't Lie". Shakira's eighth and ninth albums, She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010), received critical praise but suffered from limited promotion due to her strained relationship with label Epic Records. Her official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", became the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time. With over 665 million views, its music video is the eighth most-watched video on YouTube. Since 2013, Shakira has served as a coach on the American version of The Voice, having appeared in two of its six seasons. Her tenth album Shakira (2014) is preceded by its lead single "Can't Remember to Forget You".

Shakira has won many awards including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, twenty-eight Billboard Latin Music Awards and has been Golden Globe-nominated. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she is one of the best-selling artists of all time, having sold more than 125 milion records including more than 75 million albums worldwide[4][5][6] Outside of her work in the music industry, Shakira is also involved in philanthropic activities through charity work and benefit concerts, notably her Pies Descalzos Foundation, her performance at the "Clinton Global Initiative" created by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and her invitation to the Oval Office by President Barack Obama in February 2010 to discuss early childhood development.[7] In 2013, Shakira was listed on Forbes as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world.[8]

Dear Diary, today I saw a man who had skin of a different color than my own.

Oh, Diary! I was so scared!

So I gave him a dirty look and made note of "every stitch of his clothing, every hair from his fade to his braids, perfectly placed to intimidate" so that I could identify him in a police line-up if necessary.

And, Diary! You'll never guess what happened next!

He smiled at me and actually just wanted to watch me knit because I reminded him of his grandmother.

Oh, Diary! Did I feel ashamed? No! Because you know the next dark-skinned guy is probably going to try and rape me. I mean, his hair was so different than mine. How was I to know he wasn't the devil?

Congratulations, New York Times! That's the most racist thing I read today!

Just when the world already feels like the kind of crappy place where people get massacred just for looking different, a mentally-disturbed man gets gunned down in Times Square while tourists snap pictures, and , would you believe it, kids are smoking all of the pot, it turns out that things are just fine after all!

Because, as the Times's Metropolitan Diary feature demonstrates, even though a white woman who knits on the subway feels threatened by a man of color who does nothing to threaten her except EXIST AS A MAN OF COLOR, it all turned out okay!

The woman in question, Celeste Ploumis, was not harmed in any way!

What a relief.

Maybe next time she gets on the subway, she won't automatically assume that any guy in a fade haircut is trying to intimidate her? Maybe that's just how he likes to wear his hair?

And, maybe, New York Times, you don't have to play into this lady's racist bullshìt by illustrating this post with a cartoon of a cowering white woman with her knitting needles on alert sitting next to a large, black man with tattoos of knives on his forearms?

Au Contraire, I think that technology has given us time to think, and forced us to use our brains, back in the day when all a person's job required was hard labour, their brains just switched off, "the mind is an amazing thing, it starts working the moment you wake up in the morning, and stops the minute you get to work." Nowadays, people actually need to use their brains to get jobs, and to work. I rest my case. - Juju [October 12, 2009]

where the world stands and much we have to achieve...
- shveta [September 25, 2009]
One can cherish an accomplishment only if it is a result of pain and effort, but everything has become so easily available due the advancing technology that it has lost its value. There is a certain kind of enjoyment in achieving things after striving for them. With the developments in technology, we may be able to enjoy all the pricey luxuries but miss out on the little priceless joys of life.
Technology is not just advancing gradually, it is accelerating. As a result, the impact may come long before we expect it and long before we are ready. And yet, this issue is simply not on the radar.
