What is Love

A poem that identifies what love is and is not.
She said, "you don't know what love is."
Oh I know what it is not!
It's not a contest to see who has more experience.
It's not who your family is or your friends are.
That makes no difference!

It's not a one time thing that appears at a club for a drink and disappears when you Wake up the next morning.
It's not the money or material things you get for a little flirting.
It's not about the good times.
Anyone can laugh when it's good.

It's about the hard times.
The sad times.
When I feel backed into a corner
And the world is staring at me.
When I'm drowning in my tears

And I truly believe this is the end.
It's about that one person willing to extend that hand of salvation.
It's about that whisper in my ear
That tells me you're here with me.
It's about the strength I feel,

The breath of fresh air that saves me from drowning
As I look at you and you look at me
And see merely a man.
She said, "You don't know what love is."
No!

I know it!
I show it!
I heart and soul it!
I poured my blood in a pen and I wrote it!
So if your idea of love

Is something to kill time,
KEEP IT!
I'll be fine without it.
But when you're tired of waking up
At night thinking how long you're gonna try it.

When your finger feels light
And you fear what will happen the next day.
When the men you invite don't stay.
When that wall you worked so hard to build up comes crashing down.
And as you cry you find no relief around.

When you are close to admitting that you finally drowned.
Call my number.
It won't change.
And my hand will be extended
with a ring for your pain.

You don't know what love looks like.
I know it.
But when you figure things out
Call me and I'll show it.
