What is Environmental Pollution

Nothing in particular can define environmental pollution. What are its causes? Why and how has the state of Earth reached a level that is highly irreversible now. The reasons fall short even to count on our fingertips. But we can make an attempt to comprehend the whole issue if we start from somewhere at least.
People have been effortlessly coming up with number of deductions and measures to control the alarming disasters that are sabotaging the Earth's environment to an extent we cannot fathom yet. No one in particular is to be blamed and held responsible because of the condition our surrounding is at the present moment. It is a failure of everyone; altogether. If you may ask "what is environmental pollution", well, the first reaction any environmentalist or scientist would give is the diversity this concept holds. An environment includes east-west components to comprise its cornerstone, like, physical factors, biological elements, human activities so on and so forth. When we talk about all these diversifications, consciously the pollution aspects that ring a bell are air, water, soil, noise, etc. Perhaps the count goes on thereafter. Needless, to say, because we can see for ourselves already, as to how mother Earth is in a dire need for a curb on innumerable, hazardous pollutants and factors, just to bring it back to a good shape.

Understanding Environmental Pollution

Any impurity and contamination in the environment we breathe and partake is defined as environmental pollution. These impurities are certainly created from man-made activities and animal's natural attributes. The impurity can be air, water, land any sort of thermal radiation, etc. Now these aspects are interrelated towards destructing the face of the ozone layer, which in turn will exacerbate the state of global warming and create undesirable climatic disasters all over the globe. The main problem begins with industrialization and technological growth which releases noxious gases and chemicals into the air and simultaneously into water, wherein, the soil happens to get scuffed in this entire process too. When elements like water and soil are involved, catastrophes like ground leakage, waste-water discharge, surface-run off, littering, soil contamination all these environmental issues crowd together and destroy our eco-system. In addition to this, another aspect that is worth the consideration is the alarming population in several countries. Due to the growing population in places where knowledge is inadequate, the economic and social livelihood is dwelling on an extreme low profile.

Environmental Pollution Facts

As aforementioned, pollution of the environment is nothing but accession of impurities and contaminated substances and materials into the natural environment which happens to degrade the entire eco-system. Also, discussed are the various facets like air, water, land, etc., that has instilled maximum problems on Earth.

Undeniable Facts on Pollution
  • If you see the amount of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas, that is spewed into the air, the figure comes up to 4 tons of CO2 of everyone of the 6 billion people living on Earth. In the past 150 years the level of carbon dioxide has increased to a higher level than what it has been for hundreds and thousands of years.
  • Americans consume 22% of global oil, even though their population is just 5%. Thus, all the heat trapping gases grow by 22%. Moreover, 33% is world's paper and 72% is hazardous waste.
  • Smog cited over several cities, especially, cities which are known as an industrialization hub create a lot of air pollution, which in turn, affects the living things and surrounding atmosphere to a great extent.
  • Other greenhouse gases like nitrous oxide, methane, CFC (chlorofluorocarbon), sulfur dioxide, etc., pollute and deteriorate the ozone layer.
  • Worldwide rainforests are ceasing massively. A few centuries ago, the earth's equator was skirted by a green belt of 15 million sq. miles of rainforest. Today there are only 6.2 million sq. miles left out.
  • In addition to what causes pollution in the environment, the material used to make nuclear device called plutonium is produced in the figure of thousands of pounds whereas only two pounds of plutonium is required to create a nuclear device. Plus it is stored and expended under unsafe conditions.
  • This planet has 500 million vehicles exposed on roads and in near future it is expected to get doubled. Now, with the current fuel supplies we have today, it looks like the earth is going to get extracted completely till the last drop.
  • There are 15 major fishing zones worldwide and the yearly catch in 13 of the 15 zones has declined drastically by 30%; 1 in the Pacific Ocean and 3 in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • If one nuclear weapon is tested in a specific country, its cost and installation would finance 80,000 hand pumps all over the globe and especially villages who are in a dire need of clean water.
  • Millions and millions of toxic chemicals, harmful gases, poisonous chemical spills, pesticides, mercury, lead, raw sewage, etc. has polluted 8,000 beaches and 1/3rd of our nations rivers too. People can't catch freshwater fish for their survival and beaches have passed closures and adversary plans regarding swimming activities. All these chemicals have contaminated the waterways, the wildlife, seafood and most important the facility of drinking water.
Well, the above stated content were just some ways to reduce environmental pollution and help yourself and others too, to bring about a change in the same air that you breathe. It's high time we make no bones about the crude fact that the ones who are responsible for all the environmental damage are WE, the so-called intelligent species on this planet Earth. If we begin to pay some heed to the ongoing drastic conditions, even in this need of the hour, there are chances we can save our mother Earth!

"We generate our own environment. We get exactly what we deserve. How can we resent a life we've created ourselves? Who's to blame, who's to give credit to; but ourselves? Who can change it, anytime we wish; but us?" ~ Richard Bach
