What is Depression Glass?

Find out about the wonderful history of Depression Glass including what it is, and how it got initially started.
Depression Glass was originally created during the 1920's and early 1930's during the Great Depression. It was created because it was an extremely cheap form of glass, and was in abundant supply at the time. The reason it gained popularity and some argue the sole purpose it was created to begin with was because it was used to give away as promotional tools for shops and other businesses that sold things and were not doing as well as they hoped.

They would include depression glass for free in items that people bought, or in some cases would simply give it away to anyone who came in the store to look around. It was a good way of giving away something that cost almost nothing just to have the chance of selling something that could keep the business or company afloat for a little while longer.

The Colors of Depression

One of the interesting things about depression glass is the different colors it comes in. It can come in a variety of colors with the main ones being pink, green, blue and yellow. It also comes in black, red, white, clear and others. One interesting fact is that the colors that were not as popular during the time it was produced are now some of the more rare pieces and therefore fetch a much higher price. Black is one of the more rarer colors and can go from a few hundreds to a few thousand depending on the quality.

The Quality Of Depression Glass

One thing that makes it hard to find mint condition glass is how disposable and undervalued it was at the time it was originally distributed. If they were giving it away for free during a time when everyone nearly was poor, then they obviously didn't need to take much care of it. Also because it was shipped free with items it would often get broken or damaged simply making it's way to someones location.
