What is Copper Sulfate
An important chemical compound which finds applications in a variety of fields, copper sulfate is synthesized by the method of electrolysis. Listed below are the properties and uses of this compound...

Facts about Copper Sulfate
Copper sulfate is prepared by different methods and electrolysis is one of these. Copper electrodes are used in the process of electrolyzing sulfuric acid. Another method used in the preparation of this compound is that of Epsom salt electrolysis. Copper anode is used in this process.
Uses
Copper sulfate is a chemical which finds place in a variety of applications. Different uses of this chemical are enlisted below.
- Copper sulfate is used in the organic synthesis processes. Anhydrous form of this chemical is used as a catalyst in the transacylation process of organic synthesis. Reaction of the hydrated form with potassium permanganate produces an oxidant. This oxidant is used for the purpose of conversion of alcohols.
- Copper sulfate compounds find application in the field of pyrotechnics. Blue fireworks can be created with the help of this chemical.
- In the field of agriculture, preparation of various compounds including herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, etc. are carried out with the help of copper sulfate. Fungal infection of grapes are treated with copper sulfate fungicides.
- Copper sulfate is used in the treatment of water. Algae and other organisms can be removed from water by making use of this chemical compound.
- The use of copper sulfate in aquariums is quite common. Parasites are killed and water purified by making use of copper sulfate.
- Copper sulfate is used as an analytical agent in different chemical reactions. It is also one of the ingredients of the Benedict's and Fehling's solution. Testing for reducing sugar is carried out with the use of copper sulfate. Testing for proteins also is conducted by means of copper sulfate. Biuret reagent is the solution of which copper sulfate is one of the ingredients.
The repetitive internal pattern is responsible for the formation of copper sulfate crystals. Therefore, these crystals attain a unique shape. Crystals can be prepared at home; the process of preparing such crystals can be used as one of the projects for school kids. Copper sulfate crystals can be easily 'grown' at home. To prepare/grow these crystals, one would need hot water. The copper sulfate solution must be dissolved in hot water. The solution should be added to water to the point of saturation. The saturated copper sulfate solution should be kept undisturbed for a few days. Allowing the solution to sit for few days leads to the formation of crystals. Suspending a nylon wire in the solution provides a surface area for crystals to grow.
Dangers of Copper Sulfate Exposure
This chemical acts as an irritant and therefore, proves to be harmful when a person is exposed to it. Problems like itching and eczema are caused if copper sulfate comes in contact with the skin. Inflammation of eyelids, conjunctivitis, ulceration and other such problems occur if copper sulfate comes in contact with eyes.
These facts about copper sulfate should help in understanding its chemical properties and uses. Exposure to this chemical could be harmful. One should therefore, take the necessary precautions while handling copper sulfate.
