What is Affirmative Action

Discrimination against minority groups of men and woman has always been a big problem in almost all parts of the world. Discrimination is a tool used by the rich, powerful and influential people to obstruct the progress and prosperity of the poor and needy to make themselves more powerful. By creating obstacles in their path of progress, the influential people devoid the needy people with all sorts of amenities and facilities which are a fundamental right of any individuality. The effects of such a discrimination can be dangerous, as this will result into backwardness of the society in terms of growth and concentration of money and resources in the hands of few privileged people. Affirmative action in the workplace can give equal opportunity to people of all castes and races.

Importance

This concept originated in the United States of America many years ago. The main aim behind such a program is to eradicate any kind of discrimination against people and treat all the citizens equally. So, the result would be participation of people belonging to all castes, those speaking different languages, following various customs working together for national interest. Unless laws are made to carry out the concept of affirmative action, nothing real will actually happen is the opinion of many educated and great thinkers. And, this was true because the lack of unity among the underprivileged people and the big players taking advantage of the same. With laws regarding equality at different places such as schools, colleges, other educational institutions and in offices, the situation around the world has slightly better. Affirmative action has benefited women the most as they had very few women's rights and opportunities coming their way.

Affirmative Action in the Workplace

This means giving equal opportunities to all people engaged in different tasks. The choice of candidates for various posts will be done strictly on the basis of merit under this course of action. So, the more talented people will be getting the first preference. By doing so, the productivity of the entire office will go up and this will be reflected in its annual growth rate. This will also be good for each employee, as they have a good chance of self growth as the organization as a whole grows. Discrimination done among the employees can create feeling of hatred and anger among the employees without any reason and this does affect the total productivity. The teamwork suffers to a great extent when there is tension and conflict between people working with each other. Since these people have the same aim or common goals, then sailing in the same ship can alone insure accomplishment of the set targets.

There have been many people who have criticized this action citing several reasons for the same. On the other hand, people standing by this way of functioning are also not less. By helping the people opposing realize the importance and utility of the affirmative action, the strength of the overall group can be increased to a great extent.
