What is a USB Flash Drive?
USB flash drives, also known as thumb drives, are a NAND type flash memory. The NAND type flash memory was designed for the exchange and saving of data as an alternative to the magnetic floppy disk. The NAND type flash memory has the capacity to hold large volumes of data. The USB drives are more reliable when large amounts of data needs to be transferred. Some of the USB drives allow one million erase or write cycles. We all remember the bulky, fragile floppy discs and one of the reasons these disks were unreliable was the fact that it had moving parts and you needed to be very careful with it. Well, the USB flash drives are about the size of your thumb, that’s why they are called thumb drives, and they are very reliable and are tougher than the old floppy disks because they are made up of a secure case, small circuit board and integrated with a universal serial bus connector. The secure case is typically made of plastic or metal and it keeps the circuit board from getting damaged.
The USB flash drive is so compact that you can either carry it around in your pocket or put it on a key chain. Most computers now have the USB port which is all you need to use your USB flash drive, there aren’t any cords to go with it. This port replaced the floppy disk drives, which are no longer on computers.
USB flash drives are rewritable, but they are better than rewritable CD’s because not every computer comes with a CD-RW drive. Not to mention, if you use a CD it takes quite a while to get all the information stored on it, but with a USB flash drive you click and drag and you are done. It is that fast. CD’s can also get scratched or broken, but with a USB flash drive unless you are purposely trying to break it with a hammer, or another serious attempt at breaking it, it is very durable. The USB connector, the actual part you plug into the port, is protected by either a cap or it can be retracted into the protective case. Once your data has been saved on a USB flash drive you can be sure it is there forever, or at least until you want to get rid of it, it will never magically disappear and your USB port will always work on any computer that has a USB port.
You can save anything you need on a USB flash drive including music, which can be played on many newer car stereos, pictures, presentations, and even use it as a backup system for your computer. If you need to take your computer in for repairs and need to save a lot of information, that’s what a USB flash drive is for. You can find a USB flash drive that can hold 4GB or less, ranging from just $10 to $20. If you are in need of a storage device, you need a USB flash drive.
