What is a Concentration Camp

A very famous music composer once said, "god created the universe, mankind destroyed it". Concentration camp is a horrific nightmare that haunts the innocent till this day. This method of imprisonment was developed in the late 20th century and was used extensively in the second world war. The following article is a column to the query 'What is a Concentration Camp?'.
What is a Concentration Camp
The holocaust was a mass extermination of countless people across Europe, by the Nazi regime during the second world war. The holocaust was principally aided by the concept of concentration camps.

What is a Concentration Camp?
The term concentration camp was used by the British Armed forces personnel to refer to a refugee camp during the second Anglo-Boer war. The British who were fighting a war against the guerrilla Boer warriors, held the families of the warriors as captives in these concentration camps. It must be however noted that the British did not resort to torture of any kind in this situation. A concentration camp is often defined as a 'penal camp where political prisoners are often held to serve a sentence under harsh conditions'. Many concentration camps were set up throughout the world in the modern era. However, most of the them were strictly used to penalize political prisoners.

Nazi Concentration Camps
The concept of Nazi concentration camp was very different from the normal concentration camps. The Nazi regime did not use the concentration camp to house political prisoner, but the camps were used for the purpose of torturing and exterminating complete races of people, that were unacceptable to the Nazi regime. This outrageous mass atrocity that was carried out by the Nazi regime on innocent and helpless people is the infamous holocaust. This incident was the most horrifying aspect of the second world war and displayed the savage side of mankind.

The merciless torture of people began after the Reichstag fire. This incident was principally directed by the German people who had communist views. Shortly after this incident, Adolf Hitler ascended the position of "Chancellor" in the German political sector. At the same time, the Nazi policy of brainwashing had developed an anti-Jew feeling in Germany. The ill treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany began to take a very horrible turn after the Nazis began to isolate the Jews, in camps away from towns and cities. These isolation camps slowly changed to concentration camps, where many of the Jews were held captive and were used as forced labor. Many people such as the gypsies and disabled people were also sent to these concentration camps. These early concentration camps were places of senseless torture where the strongest resisted and weakest waited for the time with faith in their hearts that the lord above would come down to save them from the demons, clothed in the disguise of civilized men!

The Jews were not the only ones who where tortured, the outrage of the Nazi concentration camp was faced by Slavs, Russian, homosexuals and even innocent disables from all walks of society. These concentration camps were run by countless members of the Nazi government and principally the members of Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary wing under the command of Heinrich Himmler. The insane Nazi ideology changed whole generations of Europe and proved that the human race does not deserve the title of 'civilization'. The experts of holocaust have estimated that 5,933,900 Jews were killed during the Holocaust. The inhuman figures of the killings during the holocaust have created a huge dark spot in the pages of world history.

After the second world war many nations have passed laws regarding prison and prisoners in order to prevent inhuman behavior. Many harsh facts related to concentration camps have never been revealed.

Man is an animal at heart, society changes man and makes him a social animal. Civilization established many unsaid rules like compassion, equality and liberty. It is always difficult to imagine, that how could a man send a fellow human being in the flames of hell where there is no faith and then throw him into the cold hands of death? Let the Great Lord bring Peace to the Souls who experienced the darkest dooms of civilization!
