What I Had Become
David’s lost in the forest and can’t find his way out. He soon sees a creature he had only known existed in stories.
It was in mid December on a fridged evening. I searched the forest, lost, looking for my way out as the full moon shined high in the sky looking like silver. As I gazed out into the distance, something caught my eye. I looked again, and from the dull light of the silver moon, I saw a black figure with piercing blood shot eyes that seemed oddly familiar. I couldn’t make out who or what it was, all I knew was it was running towards me at an incredible speed. I jolted forward even while my feet trembled. A thick root had gotten in my way and I soon found myself plummeting towards the ground. As I struggled to get up, the creature that was chasing me, pounced.
Sharp and jagged Pain filled my body as the creature’s teeth and claws sliced through my skin with facility. Cold chills engulfed my bodie whole as I fell limp. Everything went dark, the last thing I remembered was seeing my scarlet red blood pooling beneath me, as a deep howl of pleasure erupted from the creature and echoed through the forest.
I awoke drenched within my own dried blood. Only tattered and torn cloth hung on my nearly naked body. I searched my skin trying to find the scrapes and gouges that should have been left there from the creatures attack, only to find nothing. Just thinking about the menacing creature sent a fresh wave of nausea and raw fear that swallowed me whole. I hastily searched my surroundings afraid that the beast might still be lurking here.
A sliver of the once full moon was centered high in the sky therefore I could tell it was around midnight. As I stared up upon it I wondered how much time had passed since I was unconscious. Had it been weeks? Days? Months?
A million questions flooded my mind: what was that thing? How was I still alive? Why did the beast let me live? Why didn’t I have even one scratch or scar from the attack? I attempted to shove all the puzzling questions into the back of my mind. I did this because I knew that the only thing that I should be focusing on right now is how to get out of this dreaded forest.
So I began to run. I raced through the forest. The trees whipped harshly at my somewhat bare skin but I felt no pain. Fear invaded my body, mind, and soul. With every step I took I started to notice that everything started to change and evolve.
I got faster and faster as I ran. Everything around me became blurry then I realized that I was going in an abnormal speed, that no human was capable of doing. I also noticed that my senses had enhanced immensely: I could smell the scent of each individual fragrance with extreme intensity. I could hear every soft brustle of leaves, every whisper of the wind, every heartbeat of every animal. It seemed as though everything had sharpened.
When I found a way out and started to live among the humans I noticed that I did not fit, that there was something incredibly wrong.
