Following the orders of the Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, a team of hardware engineers started working on the iPod product line. Jon Rubinstein, a hardware-engineering chief at Apple, led the team. The team comprised of other hardware engineers like Tony Fadell and Michael Dhuey and the design engineer Jonathan Ive. Jobs described the iPod as a Mac-compatible product with 5GB hard drive that enables you to put 1000 songs in your pocket!
Did Apple develop the complete software in-house? No, they did not. They used the reference platform developed by PortalPlayer, a fabless semiconductor company. After the development of portable media players, Apple began planning for the launch of their new product line. They called upon a copywriter, Vinnie Chieco to think of a way in which the product could be introduced to the public. The names he suggested for the new product were already used by others. Joseph N. Grasso of New Jersey had applied to the US Patent and Trademark Office for the trade name ‘iPod’ for Internet kiosks. In 2005, Grasso assigned the name to Apple Computer, Inc. and the iPod got its name! What do the initials of iPod stand for?
