What do Zebras Eat
Zebras, with their look resembling that of horses and their unique black and white striping pattern, are social animals living in small or large groups. Most of us have been introduced to these mammals during the early years of school. I know, you remembered yourself saying "Z for Zebra"!

What do zebras eat? Here’s the answer. Zebras are grazers. Shrubs, twigs, bark and leaves form their food. Their digestive system and metabolism allows them to sustain, in spite of the low nutrition food that makes up their diet. Typically, zebras seek green pastures. During the dry months of the year, they thrive on dry grass. Zebras tend to remain in proximity of water holes. They inhabit grasslands, savannas as also the coastal, hilly or mountainous regions.

Wondering where did the word ‘zebra’ come from? In the Old Portuguese language, the word, ‘zevra’ meant ‘wild ass’. There are three species of zebras, namely, the Plains zebra, Grevy’s zebra and the Mountain zebra. The Plains zebra and the Mountain zebra resemble a horse, while the Grevy’s zebra resembles an ass. The Grevy’s and the Mountain zebras are endangered species. The best we can do as human beings is to stop encroaching on their habitats and endangering their lives. It is our duty to protect them from extinction.
