There are 300 species of squid in the ocean. Like the cuttlefish a squid has four pairs of arms and a pair of tentacles. A squid belongs to the class marine cephalopods and order Teuthida. Squid is found only in the oceans and do not survive in the freshwater. One of the species of the squid known as giant squid is the largest invertebrate on the earth. A few species of squid include California market squid, colossal squid, Caribbean reef squid, short fin squid, deep-sea luminescent squid and so on.

Where do squid live and what do they eat?

Squid are ocean dwellers and live in the deepest regions of the ocean. Do you know some of the species of the squid have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom? A female squid spawns thousands of eggs.

The smaller species of squid thrive by eating shrimp, fish and other small marine animals. When a squid comes across a school of fish, it uses its arms to grab one of the fish. Using the arms, a squid brings the fish to its mouth. The mouth of the squid is beak-like and it is used to bite and chew the fish.

The diet habits vary from one squid species to another. For instance, a giant squid eats not only the small fish but also the smaller species of squid and large sea animals such as young ones of the shark and whale. When a giant squid comes across a big whale, using its long arms it squeezes the whale and beats it using its tentacles. If the whale escapes in the end, it would have scars on its body.

Do you know squid do not have external shells? The size of the different varieties of squids varies. The size ranges from less than an inch to over sixty feet. When a squid is disturbed or preyed upon, it has the ability to change colors. They also change color to catch their prey for food.
