What do Parrots Eat - How to Know Your Parrots Optimal Diet
Answer the Question, "What Do Parrots Eat?" -and learn why each parrot species has its own unique eating habits and necessities. Get the proper Parrot training and find out how more information for the proper training and up keep for your Parrot.
And with so many different species (Around 300), you really do need to pay attention to what species your Parrot is.
What I always tell new owners is that , the actual region where your Parrot is originally from will go along way in helping you answer the question of What does your Parrot eat. You see, just like most other animals, Parrot's adapt to there surrounding's and they will obviously evolve there eating habits to fit the place's they live.
Hopefully the pet store that sold you your Parrot will provide the details of your particular Parrot. If they don't then you have some research to do.
What you should know first of all is that there is 3 basic diet's for parrots as a whole. I am going to list them describe them and get you a link to a site with more in depth descriptions of Parrot's and the food they eat.
Basically, there are 3 separate diets that will cover all the different Parrot species:
1. Seed-Based Diets - Somewhat deficient in many vitamins and minerals -but they are easy and quickly available when needed.
2. Formulated Diets (Usually Pellets) - Usually the formulated diet will cover basic nutritional needs of all species - but certain species will definitely need added or supplemental foods, like fresh foods and other such food that contain the necessary vitamins and minerals (Fresh food has a way of keeping all the natural minerals and vitamins)
3. Cooked Diets - Basically these are great diets. You can cook them yourself or buy them precooked. But they can lose there nutritional value if not fed to the Parrots before they spoil.
Now, as for seed's, like I said earlier, they aren't the greatest diet for your Parrot -BUT - they will work and you should definitely have your self a package in reserve, even if you aren't going to make seed's a staple of your Parrots diet. They will work and they are excellent for a back up plan.
Now, when it comes to buying your Parrot food from the pet store, be CAREFUL. Many times these packages of food will not give you the best information.
They might say something to the effect of, "Large Pellets" or "Great for Big Parrots". You see, this is not specific enough. As some Parrot's might actually be a little bigger, but that doesn't mean they eat large pellet's or food.
Some Parrots will eat solely with there beak's. and some like to Pick up the food with there claws. And the difference between the two MUST be taken into account.
If the Parrot eat's the food directly off of the dish or plate, then the pellets or food MUST be smaller. And dont be surprised if a bigger Parrot need's smaller food. Its all about where they are from and what the Parrot's are used to doing.
Basically, what I always tell Parrot owner, is that you do need some help in determining the proper feeding and diets plans. Go ahead and grab your own Parrot Up Keep and training guide. They are the best thing for Parrot owners. If you are dedicated to the long haul, and a possible 60 year relationship with this very special pet, then you will always be glad you took the extra step.
Not only will you give yourself a much better idea of what each and every Parrot requires diet wise, but you will get some really great tip's for Speech Training and great expertise for helping your Parrot to become a very loving pet.
