Wedding Guest Attire

Wedding guest attire etiquette should essentially be followed if you want to avoid embarrassment in a wedding gathering. This following article includes some guidelines on wedding guest attire for men and women.
One of the most important thing that is to be considered before going for a wedding ceremony is the wedding guest attire. In a wedding, people are expected to wear a certain type of wear which will perfectly match the celebration atmosphere. If you go to a marriage ceremony in a different attire, people may tag you as odd man out, or simply keep names.

Determinants of the Appropriate Wedding Guest Attire

The best way of determining which wedding guest attire is to be worn is to refer to the wedding invitation itself. The expected wedding guest attire is usually mentioned on the invitation such as black tie, black tie optional, casual, semi-formal, etc. If you do not find any of these mentioned on the invitation, then you can choose an appropriate wedding guest attire by referring to the location or venue where the wedding is going to be held such as indoor, outdoor, beach wedding, and similar other locations.

You can find out a suitable wedding dress according to which season is the wedding being held in like spring, autumn, summer, or winter. The time of the wedding ceremony is to be taken in mind, as typically, there can be suitable attires for different times of the day. If you are still not getting the idea of a right wedding guest attire, then it is better to ask a close one of the couple or the wedding organizer regarding the appropriate dress code. Let us now take a look at the wedding guest attire for women and men according to the respective dress codes mentioned on the invitation.

Wedding Guest Attire Etiquette

Black Tie
If 'black tie' is mentioned in the invitation, a proper wedding attire for a woman will be a floor-length dress, and for a man it will be a dark tuxedo and a bow or necktie.

Black Tie Optional
If 'black tie optional' is mentioned in the invitation, a proper wedding guest attire for a man would be a tuxedo or a dark suit. Here, a woman would be expected to wear cocktail apparel.

Casual
There can be times when 'casual' might be written on the wedding invitation, though this is quite rare. A casual dress code does not mean that you can come in worn out jeans or any funky look, it just means that the setting is the less formal. For men, a suitable attire would be a shirt and trouser with or without a tie. A suit is optional for men. Women, on the other hand, can choose to wear any decent knee-length dress. A business casual is also considered suitable for a casual dress code.

Semi-formal
A semi-formal dress code would require a man to wear a dark suit, and a woman to wear a decent short dress or a cocktail dress.

This was some general information on typical wedding guest attire. With choosing an appropriate dress, also make sure that you are comfortable wearing it. For a wedding ceremony or a wedding reception, a man should not wear club-wear and a woman should not wear revealing clothes. Regardless of all the dress code formalities, a dark suit and a tie will always be an appropriate dress for a man. If the dress code is ultra-casual, only then you can think of wearing jeans and other informal wear. Similarly, there are many other things that are to be thought of before choosing the wedding guest attire.
