Websites that Can Kill You

More and more people are turning to the Internet for all things health related - advice, online doctor consultations, and even online prescriptions. But with online prescriptions, people should be extra cautious about websites that promise any kind of narcotic or pain medication.
It’s a sad fact. Millions of Americans live with physical pain day after day - whether it be chronic pain, short term pain, or severe pain. For these people, learning to mentally cope with the pain is the hardest part of all, leaving them with no choice but to seek medical help to find ways to relieve the pain and improve the quality of their lives.

In today’s day and age, it is not a surprise to learn that on a daily basis, more and more people are turning to the internet for medical treatment - with services such as online doctor consultations and online pharmacies. While it is true that legitimate online medical consultation websites- complete with the services of qualified, licensed physicians - offer a huge array of medical services and online prescriptions, the most reputable of these websites will not offer a prescription for any kind of narcotic or pain medication simply because of the high risk of prescription drug abuse, and that online doctors are not able to physically examine patients to determine that their condition warrants the prescription of a pain medication.

Even doctors in offices and emergency rooms around the country can’t always distinguish between those patients who have serious issues and the ones who are just looking for their next buzz. Therefore, it is extremely difficult for an online doctor who is not face to face with his or her patient – to determine if pain medication is warranted or not. Anyone can get online and visit an online doctor service to say that they are in pain. This is the main reason why pain medications are not granted through legitimate online medical consultation services.

With this, thousands turn to online pharmacies - many of which are illegal, and offer counterfeit medicine. At present time, more than 5000 online pharmacies were recently closed down by the Drug Enforcement Agency of the United States - some of them for counterfeit medicine, and most of them for illegally selling drugs (from outside countries) to United States citizens. In the U.S., it is illegal to order medication from outside of the country, even if a prescription is held. Legitimate online pharmacies will have qualified, U.S. licensed physicians on staff who will diligently review each person’s medication request, and write a prescription for that person if it is deemed safe. However, prescription narcotics are NEVER granted online by a reputable online medical consultation service or online pharmacy. Those who attempt to obtain narcotics such as codeine, Tylenol #3, Oxycontin, Demeraol, Percodan, Percocet, etc. can be charged with a federal crime.

Many people get spam emails and read about how they can get prescription pain medications online. However, the majority of the sites that are offering this service are often the illegitimate, illegal online physician services or pharmacies.

There are a variety of online doctor prescriptions that can be written, but they are generally for less habit-forming and dangerous drugs, such as antibiotics, medication for specific illnesses, and other medications that aren’t going to lure in drug seekers and those people who don’t really need the prescriptions in the first place. Teens and adults alike have turned to prescription medication abuse because it’s accessible, it’s affordable, and it gives many of the same results as the illegal substances that are much more costly and harder to find. In many cases, someone who is hooked on Vicodin or other narcotics might even justify themselves as being ‘okay’ because they aren’t doing heroin or other illegal street drugs.

However, prescription abuse is still drug abuse, and it’s the main reason that online doctors don’t offer prescription pain medications to patients. Those patients who genuinely need medical care and pain medications will need to continue to see a doctor in person to get the treatment and prescriptions that they need, because the online doctors won’t be as readily able to give out these drugs. Online medical consultations are an effective solution for those who can’t afford or find time to get to a regular doctor, but it’s just not in a place where it can be an equal service because of the anonymous nature of the internet.
