Website design: Defining Website

An article that defines a web site and a web page and high lights different types of websites on the Internet.
A web site or a portal is a collection of pages designed using a mark up language such as Html and other related designing tools. These pages are referred to as web pages and the collection together is called a website. The web pages are designed as such that they can be viewed on the World Wide Web or the Internet.

The website has to be browser compatible so that viewers using different web browsers are able to view the pages effectively. A web browser downloads the web pages on the user's computer and makes it visible to the viewer. Designing web websites is the work of professional web design company.

The website and its pages have an address known as universal resource locator or the URL this helps the web browser to locate the website hosted on a server and fetch it to the viewer when a query is made.

The mark up languages and scripting tools help organize text, graphics, sounds, and utilities such that a properly formatted web page is formed for the users benefit and the ease of viewing. Needless to say, the web pages are generated electronically on the cyber space.

On a website, the pages are linked with each other by hyper links in a relational manner and this is referred to as internal linking by the web designers. If a web site links to pages outside the website to another website or pages such hyperlinks are known as external links.

There are different types of websites on the Internet designed as per the usage they offer to the web visitors on the Net. The website design differs accordingly.

1. Corporate Web Site: Highlights the company profile in details including a contact form for those interested in forwarding a query for further information or a business proposal. The corporate web sites may be simple or complex in nature with high-resolution graphics and often multimedia to impress the visitor and generate positive impression about the company and its services.

2. Commercial Web sites: Or e-commerce sites which are always meant for active online transactions such as buying and purchasing goods the website intends to sell to the visitor. Apart from displaying features and commercial information about the products e-commerce sites offer online purchase through a shopping carts as well. Many e-commerce sites have online payment systems for electronic payments by the purchaser. These sites are also known as shopping sites on the Internet.

3. Informational Websites: disseminates information useful to the visitors. The information contained would be of any field from being scientific, industrial, sports, encyclopedia or any other.

4.Other Sites. There are sites that offer relationship building, marriage proposals, astrology and plethora of other benefits. The Internet is infinite and various possibilities exist for web user’s benefit.
