Wearing Contacts when Boxing

You’re into boxing but you’re suffering from poor vision. Wearing glasses is, of course, out of the question so what can you do to keep up with this up-close sport. The best solution is wearing contact lenses but there are a few things one has to take into consideration. In this article we’ll take you through the various steps and what one has to think about.
According to the WBC (World boxing Council) is it ok for a boxer to wear contacts while boxing but it’s something that has to be decided from case to case. What suits one boxer is a bad idea for another – always make sure that you’re safe while in the ring!

What Type of Lenses is to prefer?

The market for contact lenses has exploded the latest years and there’s more types of lenses than one can imagine. Daily Contact lenses, Monthly Contacts, Gas Permeable Contacts, Extended Wear Contacts, Soft Contacts, Hard Contacts… The list of contact lenses could go on forever and it’s not always easy to know what type of contacts that is to prefer – especially when into such a body contact sport such as boxing.

If you suffer from poor vision and still want to keep up boxing then soft contact lenses is the way to go. They’ll be the most comfortable ones to wear and they are also the type of lens that will have the best chance of staying in your eyes if getting punched. Hard contacts is not even to consider! With soft contacts will you also risk the chance of losing your lenses while in the ring but you’ll at least stand a better chance of keeping them. A tip is to purchase soft daily contact lenses since if you lose them it won’t be a problem replacing them. With monthly contacts it could become a costly affair since they cost more than dailies and you don’t have as many replacements as with dailies.

Eye Surgery is Not to Recommend

Some of you might consider having LASIK surgery so that you won’t even have to think about contacts lenses while boxing. Although a good thought it’s not anything that we would recommend. In doing so you could seriously harm your eyes! When having LASIK surgery the surgeon will create a flap in your cornea with a blade or a laser. The flap is then moved and an excimer laser is then used to remove the tissue underneath the cornea. Once this procedure is done the flap is folded back down for healing.

In worst case scenario it could only take one punch to open up this flap again and that would mean trouble. Your eyes are sensitive and you should never ever do anything that could potentially harm them for life. With contact lenses all you have to worry about is potentially losing them while in a fight. Take your vision seriously and take care of your eyes the best way possible!
