‘Daddy? Where are you?’
‘I’m right here Sweetie, right here’
As the lightening lit up the house every now and then, it was still too hard to move. The fear of stepping on glass or falling and landing on sharp wood was too much. It was complete darkness, and then a few seconds light. As Michael tried to find a way to get to his daughter, Summer, all he could hear were soft whimpers and sobs.

Being only 4, Summer didn’t understand what was going on; all she did was what she was told, "if anything happens, go to your safe spot". Her dad had taught her to do all sorts of things, always due to the fact that anything could happen, especially since they would be after them too now. First the mother, then the child, then the money… then the father is discarded, he just isn’t needed anymore.

As thunder struck again what was left of the wooden frame shook and splintered causing pieces to fall all around. Fortunately Summer was sheltered, her safe spot was in the un-used hollow of the chimney, you couldn’t see in there due to the guard, and nothing could fall down because it was closed at the top. That’s why it was safe.

‘Summer, count to 10 and I’ll be at your side, okay?’
‘Okay Daddy.’
‘…1…’
‘…2…’
‘…3…’
‘…4…’
‘NO, PLEASE… SHE’S JUST A BABY!’
BANG…silence
‘ Daddy?’

Summer sat in her spot until morning, for a number of reasons. First she was worried as to why her dad had stopped talking to her after the bang, she’s watched films with her dad where there’s a big bang and the person won’t talk anymore. Daddy said they’re in ‘Cloudland’, but of course she knew what he meant. But the biggest reason she didn’t want to leave is because she doesn’t know where else to go. Summer lost most of her family before she was born, Mummy said it was because they were special and people don’t like our kind. But mummy was taken too, not killed as far as her father knew, but just taken, kidnapped.

Finally summer looked out. As soon as she did she knew she couldn’t live here. There was no roof, most of the walls had disappeared, and basically it was just one huge pile of material that could not have been saved. Summer climbed up and over the fire guard and started looking for something, anything. She found her broken wardrobe and collected some clothes, she went to the dented fridge and collected some of her favorite food, and she found her Disney Princess school bag and placed all of her findings in there. While she was zipping it up she looked under her bag. She found a photo of herself, her mum, her dad and her dog, Cocoa on a picnic, in a broken frame. She lifted the back off and there it was, a stash of emergency money. She put the money in her pocket and took the photo out. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she placed the photo carefully on the top of all her things in her bag.
