So now you don't need to be told why conserving energy is important, but simply methods of conserving energy and making it last a little longer than it is meant to.

10 Ways to Save Energy

Conserving energy is really not as difficult as you may think it is. All you have to do is take some very simple measures to do it, and you will be able to do not only the present generation, but also the coming generations some great good.
  1. Start by remembering to switch off all your lights and fans when you leave the room.
  2. Use only energy saving lights known as CFLs that save about 20%-30% energy and help you reduce your bills.
  3. Do not leave your microwave, television, computer, DVD player, or any other electronic appliance on standby. Though not in use, when in standby these electronics consume a lot of energy and up your bills tremendously.
  4. Imbibe the concept of energy efficient homes and choose appliances that all have energy star ratings. All these use much lesser energy and function as efficiently as any other electronic appliances.
  5. Make the most of solar energy by hanging your clothes out to dry in the sun rather than using your dryer. This method not only saves energy, but has your clothes smelling and feeling fresh!
  6. With winters around, set your thermostat at 68 degrees during the day and at 55 degrees during the evening to keep cozy. This temperature keeps you warm enough and also consumes lesser energy. Also, to prevent your bills from rising greatly in the winters, insulate your house well. This will reduce the need for you to use the thermostat and help you save energy.
  7. Don't leave the refrigerator door open for too long while deciding what you want from it. Doing so consumes a lot of electricity, and may also spoil your refrigerator over time. Also ensure that you cool your food before you place it in the refrigerator.
  8. Don't spoil yourself and your kids by using your car to take you everywhere. Instead use alternative energy sources (mechanical energy) that will also give you some exercise apart from saving energy. Try cycling, skating, or walking to your destination. It allows you to spend more time together, and keeps you healthy too. Also try to choose public transport over a single car to transport just one person.
  9. Use water heaters that function on solar power. Don't allow your water heater to be on for longer than you need it. Also, don't leave the shower on when you don't need it while bathing. In fact, it is ideal to use a bucket to bathe rather than using the shower. This will help you save a lot of water, and allow you to use the water heater lesser.
  10. Service all your appliances (including your vehicle) on a regular basis, so that they work efficiently without consuming too much energy. If any part requires replacement, do it immediately rather than waiting for the appliance to stop working completely and hitting your pocket drastically.
As you can see, energy saving is not a difficult task, and by setting an example for your little ones, you can also teach them how to value all that nature has to provide to us. Remember, the sooner you start following these ways to save energy, the longer you will be able to survive comfortably, and perhaps leave behind some for the coming generations.
