Stress, in a way, is like a sleeping volcano - you never know when it will come to life and explode. Unfortunately, a lot of people take the concept of stress very lightly. What most people do not realize, is that stress, if allowed to build up, can cause serious health issues both mentally as well as physically. Therefore, it is extremely important to combat stress and keep it at a minimal level. Here are some of the best ways in which you can relieve stress.

Meditation
Meditation, prayer and spirituality really help in combating stress and in remaining calm. If you're indoors, select a silent room which is cool, but not cold. Draw the blinds, shut off any disturbance-causing appliances and sit down to meditate for a few minutes. If you have a regular meditation routine that you follow and which works for you, then that's great. Or else, simply close your eyes and clear your mind of all thoughts. Feel the silence and the sanctity within you. Let God guide you through your difficult phase.

Exercise
Exercise or any other form of physical activity is very effective as a stress buster. Spend some time playing your favorite sport. It boosts metabolism, blood circulation and makes one feel good. Yoga is widely practiced by people all over the world as a means of relaxation, well-being and stress relief. From Bhutan to Beverly Hills, yoga exercises and breathing techniques are increasingly becoming popular as effective stress relievers.

Music
Music is a great way of relieving stress. Meditation music and music therapy are fast gaining in popularity for their efficacy in relieving stress. However, that does not mean that other forms of music do not help in combating stress. Each one of us has our own personal favorites when it comes to music genres. Listen to that which you like. It will make you happy and will help in reducing your stress levels.

  • Join a laughter club. Spend some time watching stand-up comedy based television shows. Or watch cartoons! After all, laughter is the best medicine!
  • Spend a few minutes doing a punching bag workout. Trust me, beating the hell out of that bag will give you a really big high. Mentally, it is very much like bashing all your troubles away and beating the stress out of your life.
  • Take your dog out for a walk. Pets are not only wonderful companions, but they also help a great deal in relieving stress.
  • Set up a nice, comfortable hammock in your backyard and lie down for a nice nap. It will work wonders, trust me.
  • Alternatively, sit under the starlit night sky in an easy chair and silently observe the clouds floating across the sky, the cool night breeze ruffling the leaves of the nearby trees, and the odd bird flying overhead.
  • If you live near the coast, you're a helluva lucky bloke! Whenever you're stressed, just head out to the beach, lie down on the sand and close your eyes. It works like magic and I completely vouch for it. (God I miss the sea!)
  • Install a water fountain in your home. It could be in your lawn, alongside your patio, or even indoors such as in your living room or your bedroom. Flowing water has an extremely calming effect and it is a great stress buster.
  • Play a musical instrument. It really works. Personally, I find that the warm sound of the soft, slow strumming of an acoustic guitar works like magic.
  • Pursue a hobby. Doing what you like will make you happy, and when you're happy, your stress levels will automatically come down. Trust me, pursuing hobbies is great for stress management.
