Watermelons are grown on fertilized sand and they have to be kept on a little bit of height. For this reason, slightly raised beds are made. They have to be grown in rows and these rows have to be ten feet apart. Small watermelons are implanted in these beds. Pollination is the key factor for watermelon plants. After implantation of these tiny melons, it will take about a month for the vine to grow and spread about eight feet. This crop needs to be harvested for next five months. The new water melons appear in about three months after implantation.
While choosing a watermelon, make sure that it is symmetrical. Do not choose a watermelon which has cuts or bruises in it. A ripe water melon will have a fairly shiny surface. If you want to confirm whether or not the water melon is ripe, then all you have to do is thump it a little bit. If the sound is hollow and the melon has enough weight, then you may conclude that it is ripe.
