For most of us, wasps are fearsome insects that can inflict stinging bites. Once you notice them frequenting your garden or backyard, you will start searching for methods to get rid of them. Though, wasps are said to be insects that are a vital part of the ecosystem. The bites they inflict are only a part of their defensive response to threats. However, wasp stings can be painful and may also cause severe and life-threatening allergic reactions in some people. So, it is always better to deter them from frequenting your premises. This can be done with the help of wasp repellents, wasp traps, etc. This article deals with the various aspects of wasp repellents.

Wasp Repellents

Using repellents is one of the effective methods of deterring wasps from frequenting and nesting in your premises. These repellents can be of different types. You may use chemicals or go for organic wasp repellents. Nowadays, even electronic wasp repellents are available in the market. Some types of wasp repellents are meant for spraying on the skin and clothing, so as to repel wasps. While chemicals are not preferred due to their harmful nature, organic and other types of wasp repellents are mainly used by people. Let us take a look at the different types of wasp repellents.

Natural Wasp Repellents

While, some people grow herbs in their premises for deterring wasps, others use sprays made of different natural products. If you want to adopt the first method, grow plants like mint, wormwood, lemongrass, etc. Among them, wormwood is said to be the most effective one, and this plant can be grown as borders in garden. Even the dried cuttings of the plant are found to be effective as insect repellent. You have to grow them in well drained soil and make sure the location is not near plants like fennel, peas, anise, etc.

Lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, etc., are also effective as wasp repellents. In case of lavender oil, you may either use it on the skin and clothing or else spray it on areas frequented by these insects. Mix ¼ ounce of lavender oil with ½ ounce citronella oil and 1/8 ounce each of pennyroyal oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil and jojoba oil, to prepare a homemade wasp repellent. This mixture has to be diluted with sixteen ounces of jojoba oil, before applying on skin. If you want a lavender oil wasp repellent that can be used as a spray for the premises, then replace 16 ounces of jojoba oil with the same amount of vodka.

It has also been noted that eucalyptus oil combined with citronella oil is also an effective remedy for wasps. In order to make a wasp repellent with eucalyptus oil, you have to combine equal amounts of menthol oil, teak oil and citronella oil with the above said oil. Spraying this mixture on your premises will repel wasps and also prevent them from nesting that area. Even citrus oil extract can work wonders for wasp insect control. All you have to do is to spray the extract in your premises. It is said that citrus oil extract can kill wasps, once these insects come in contact with it. Some people also use blue cypress oil for repelling wasp. Other natural wasp repellents include cucumber slices, rosemary oil, laundry bleach solution, baby powder, etc. You may also use neem oil as an insecticide, so as to repel wasps.

In short, there are many different natural wasp repellents that can be used as per your preference, availability and effectiveness. Electronic wasp repellent is claimed to be effective for this purpose, but, its effectiveness is still not proven. You may also use wasp traps that can be bought from stores. These traps can also be easily made at home. So, try these methods, in case of a wasp problem.
