Washing Machine Won't Drain

A washing machine is one such home appliance that have made our life so much easier. We do not have to take the trouble of hand washing thus save us a lot of time and energy on laundry. However, at times, while handling this machine, you encounter a very common problem that the washing machine is not draining properly. Actually, a washing machine that won't drain is not such a grave issue, as you assumed it to be. You can solve this problem on your own, without taking the help of any repairman.

Why the Washing Machine Won't Drain Completely?

When the washing machine is completing other cycles like filling and agitating but is not emptying, then the problem lies with some specific parts of the machine. Let us check out possible problems and the solution available for each of them.

Reason #1
The first part that needs to be inspected is the hose. There could be a kink in the hose that prevents the water from draining out. If you notice any kink in the hose, what you need to do is to simply straighten the hose and you will find that the washing machine starts draining normally. The hose may also get clogged by a piece of clothing or soap ball. Disconnect the hose from the bottom of the tub and check out for any obstruction. Removal of the blockage will resume the functioning of the washing machine.

Reason #2
There is a lid switch in the washing machine which is a kind of safety device that ensures that the lid is closed properly before the machine starts the spin cycle. When the lid switch of the washing machine is not working then it can affect the draining of the machine. To check this problem, take off the machine lid and then put it back. As you press and release the switch, you should hear a clicking noise. If you cannot hear any such sound then you have to replace the lid switch with the new one.

Reason #3
Any trouble in the pump of the machine can trigger this problem. To check this, turn on the machine and run an empty cycle. When the pump is working you can hear the sound or otherwise there will be no sound. A small object stuck in the pump can affect the functioning of the pump. Once the blockage is removed, the normal draining process will be restored. Defects in certain parts like the rotor coil or vanes, can stop the motor from functioning. In that case, you have to remove the motor, to check it out more carefully and do the needful repair work. In certain cases, you may have to replace the pump.

Reason #4
Sometimes, it happens that the draining of the water takes place but the drained water returns to the machine after the spin cycle. The reason behind this problem is that the laundry tub is draining out water very slowly and the washer is drawing off the water from the laundry tube. In such a situation the drainage of the laundry tub has to be improved. If there is a hose inside the tub which is more than four inches in length, it has to be cut short. In case the drain hose is at a lower level than the washer cabinet, then installation of an air gap or siphon will help to get rid of the problem.
