The Wall Street Journal is an English language international daily, which was started by Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser on July 8, 1889. The newspaper is named after the famous street in New York and is published by Dow Jones and Company. With the advent of Internet, and increasing competition from other newspapers, almost every newspaper was struggling to retain its readers and off course attract new ones. In 1996, The Wall Street Journal Online , was launched. It was nothing but an Internet edition that was launched in order to complement the print newspaper. By 2003, the management decided to integrate reporting of the print and online subscribers together in the Audit Bureau of Circulation Statements. As of 2006, it recorded a daily worldwide circulation of more than 2 million with as many as 931,000 paying subscribers online. The online edition had both current news, and archives of the previous editions, which can be accessed by its members. The news stories, and other columns have been categorized into various categories and sections that makes it easier for the online readers to scan through and find the exact information. In order to keep up with the trends in the Internet era, Wall Street Journal Online subscription also offers an email service and other multimedia services including the popular features like Blog, videos and pod casts.

The Wall Street Journal Online provides options for its subscribers to either avail the online facility alone or avail a combined print and online subscription according to the requirement and convenience of the readers. The subscription required users to fill out a detailed online subscription form in order to subscribe to the online as well as print editions. Currently the annual subscription for the online edition costs $79 for subscribers who do not have subscriptions to the print edition. However for people who wish to subscribe to both the Internet and the print edition, the annual membership comes at $99, with the print delivery from Monday through Saturday, and a 24/7 access on the Internet edition. However subscribers of other premium service providers like Congo Netpass or Americal Online, can view the Wall Street Journal’s paid content for free on a limited basis. There are also a number of online newspaper services that subscribe to the Dow Jones syndicate and can access certain Wall Street Journal stories.

The online archives are one of the most useful features that the Internet edition of any print medium has introduced. Convenient storage of a huge database of archives of the newspapers is made available on the Internet and can be accessed easily. These online archives are made easy to use due to the search option that helps users to find the exact news story or column according to the date or the subject.
