Wall murals are a far better alternative to wall papers. Read on to know why and also as to how to install wall murals…
You can get a wall mural with your favorite flower, animal, city, season or almost anything under the sun. The list is endless. And these days, with technology on its peak, you can get customized wall murals with pictures of your family and loved ones. Customized wall murals may work out a little expensive and if you can afford the same, then you will just have to provide a photograph that you want on your mural to a company and they will hand you back your mural in a couple of days. The murals are usually digitally printed but if you want to go all the way, you can even purchase hand painted wall murals. Without a doubt, the hand painted wall murals will cost far more, but at the end of the day, you will be satisfied with the difference that it can make in a simple room.
Wall murals have a long life as the paper that is used to make the mural is impregnated with vinyl and is tear resistant. This will ensure that you will not have to replace the murals in a couple of years because they are not damaged as is the case with wall papers. Wiping the murals gently with a damp cloth once a week will ensure that the murals brighten up your house for years.
Installing Wall Murals
Before you begin with the installation of the wall murals ensure that the panels that you have received are complete and not damaged. To install wall murals on your own you will need a paint brush, some wallpaper paste, a smoothing brush, straight edge razor blades, chalk lines and a few pieces of clean cloth and sponge.
Before you begin hanging the murals, ensure that the wall is flat and clean. Any holes or dents present in the wall should be fixed with a mixture of spackling compound and sand. It is recommended that the wall be painted with 2 coats of flat latex paint. If you are not repainting the wall, then rinse the wall with cool clean water with the help of a sponge after washing it thoroughly with warm soapy water to remove all dust and dirt. Let the wall dry completely before you begin hanging the murals.
Mark the exact place on the wall where the first panel will be hung using a chalk line. The first panel that should be hung is the left panel. Apply a thin and even coat of the wallpaper paste along the entire backside of the panel. Let the paste dry for a few minutes. Carefully, position the left edge of the panel along the chalk line. Once the panel is in place, with the help of a damp sponge, gently push any air pockets that may be trapped under the panel. Use gentle sweeping strokes as it will not damage the mural. Lastly, press down on the outer edges to confirm that the panel has firmly stuck on the wall.
The next panel will be the one that is directly adjacent to the first one. Ensure that you overlap the panels correctly so that there is no continuity break in the picture. Repeat this process until all the panels are in place. At the end, wipe the mural firmly with the damp cloth especially along all the edges of the panel. This will help ensure that all excess paste drips out.
It takes 2 full days for the mural to dry completely. Once it has dried up completely, check along the seams and ensure that they are completely glued down. You may have to add some paste again in case some edges have not glued in completely.
