Walk - 10,000 Steps a Day

The 10,000 steps a day was an initiative started in Japan. A Japanese study looked at a large number of very healthy individuals and interviewed them extensively to see what kinds of things they had in common. All of the participants had one main thing in common, and that was that they all walked over 10,000 steps a day. This isn't extra "exercise" walking, this was just their normal everyday life. A couple years ago, there was a big push in the US to encourage people to walk 10,000 steps a day, but like most fitness initiatives, it fell to the wayside.

Although walking may not get you sweating, it is one of the best exercises you can participate in. It is non stressful, it doesn't have to cost anything, and you can do it regardless of how heavy you are. When you get started, you can wear a pedometer to record how many steps you do each day. That will help you to create a baseline or what you do normally, and then allow you to monitor yourself as you work to increase the number of steps you do.

In addition to losing weight, walking is a great way to clear your mind, work through mental problems, and to lower your overall stress. You can walk by yourself or with friends. You can walk outside, around your house, or on a treadmill. You can listen to music while you walk, talk to yourself, or enjoy the quiet. How and where you walk is not important. The speed at which you walk isn't hat important either. Your only goal is to walk over 10,000 steps each day. Once you've reached that goal, you want to make sure you maintain at least 10,000 steps a day. If you add in a change to your diet, you can quickly lose your excess weight this way.
