Waiting For A Lover To Return

When love leaves, it's sometimes too hard to let go.
Once upon a time,
She used to watch the new sunrise,
Shine it's light between the stones
In celebration of a solstice morn.
Now she hides away
Behind the mask of darker days,
Her fearful eyes are always closed,
She cannot bear the sunrise anymore.
And I understand
The reason why she feels so sad,
It's held within a darker time
Where love no longer shines.

The hand that held the rose,
Purpled in its purple haze,
Has dropped the flower in the lake
To ebb away with the tide of change.
As she sits by the stream
Within a melancholy dream,
Beneath the leafless tree of autumn
Waiting for a lover to return.
And I understand
The reason for her sorrow's pain,
It lies within the rose held hand
And bleeds upon a thorn.

As shadows count the days,
The time is blown on the breeze,
A ship sails into the quay,
She climbs the steps to see if it is he.
Faces lined with pain,
Weathered by the wind and rain,
The come ashore to sell their gain,
But alas she never recognizes him.
And I understand
Why she turns to hide away,
To retreat from sorrows pity,
Where love holds no pithy.

Scented flowers, inhaled,
Remind her of a love that failed,
Swirling on a winter wind
Blowing through the cobwebs of her mind.
Memories from afar
Of rainbow coloured shooting stars,
The tawny owl who watched her mourn,
The petals of a love drowned in the pond.
And I understand
The way that she feels condemned,
To break her heart forevermore,
Like I break mine for her.
