How are Vocal Nodules Formed?

Whenever we are using our voice, the vocal cords open and close to allow air to enter from the lungs and produce sound. When there is some irritation in the vocal cord, one or both the cords enlarge. This condition of enlarged cords is know as a nodule. As a result of the enlargement, the opening and closing of the vocal cord does not take place normally, the conversion of air into audible words gets affected and the vocal nodules symptoms start showing up.

There are several causes that lead to irritation of vocal cord. It can happen due to excessive shouting, screaming or coughing. Singing for a long time, allergic reactions in the throat, heartburn and stress are some of the other causes of vocal nodules. At the initial stage, patches of tissue with swelling and irritation can be observed in the vocal cord region which later hardens up to form nodules. Due to the formation of nodules, the voice of a person becomes harsh, scratchy and hoarse. In some people, it can delay the process of voice initiation. That means, a person may find that the sound is being produced moments later after talking. Vocal nodules cause a lot of trouble to the singers. The consistency of their voice goes missing due to nodules. Even the range of the voice gets affected which makes it difficult for them to sing loudly. When the nodules are growing, no pain is usually observed. When the nodule is fully grown, then it is likely to result in neck pain. It can also cause pain from ear to ear.
