Vitamin D3 is a major form of vitamin D, which has several important health benefits. Find out more about benefits of this vitamin in this article.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, which can be of five types, vitamin D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5. Out of these, vitamin D2 or ergocalciferol and vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol are the two major forms of vitamin D. Vitamin D2 is produced by the invertebrates like, fungus and plants in the presence of ultra violet radiation of the sunlight, while vitamin D3 is produced in the skin of vertebrates in response to ultraviolet B light of the sun. This vitamin can be found in certain foods such as fish like, salmon, tuna, and sardines, cod liver oil and eggs. Cholecalciferol is the inactive form of vitamin D, which is converted to calcidiol by the liver. Calcidiol is then converted to calcitriol, either by the monocytes or the kidneys. Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D3. Vitamin D has several health benefits.

Vitamin D3 Advantages

Vitamin D or vitamin D3 is mainly concerned with the absorption of calcium, which is why it is so important for bone health. Vitamin D deficiency can manifest in thin and brittle bones and many other health problems.

Bone Health
As mentioned already, it facilitates the absorption of calcium from food, as well as the reabsorption of this mineral by the kidneys. Along with calcium, it also promotes the absorption of phosphorus from food. Both these minerals are important for maintaining bone health. Calcium is important for maintaining bone density and preventing diseases like, osteomalacia and rickets.

Immune System
It is known to strengthen the immune system. Several studies conducted in this regard have shown that this vitamin can enhance the immune functions, and may prove effective in preventing the development of autoimmune disorders. This vitamin can help to treat inflammatory diseases as well.

Neuromuscular System
It is required for the smooth functioning of the neuromuscular system. This vitamin can provide protection against muscle weakness that usually occurs with aging. Deficiency of this vitamin can manifest in decreased muscle strength in the elderly.

Weight Loss
It may promote weight loss, if combined with regular exercise and a balanced diet. This vitamin may promote the proper assimilation of foods, along with regulating the blood sugar level. However, its supplement alone cannot promote weight loss, if it is not combined with other necessary lifestyle changes.

Skin
It is known to possess anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, it can prove helpful in controlling inflammatory skin conditions like, psoriasis. It can also promote wound healing, reduce itching and may help to alleviate skin lesions caused by conditions like, lichen planus and photodermatitis. It can help to rejuvenate the skin as well.

Depression
The relationship between vitamin D3 and depression is not very clear, though one study has reported that this vitamin deficiency may raise the risk of depression in both men and women. It can also cause hyperparathyroidism, and depression can be an important symptom of this condition.

Apart from these, vitamin D and its supplements, which are available in both tablet and liquid form can have several other benefits. Regulation of blood pressure and protection against cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer are some of the noteworthy benefits. However, like any other supplements, vitamin D3 supplements should also be taken with care as its overdose can cause certain side effects. These side effects can be avoided by taking it in the appropriate dosage and under the supervision of a health care provider.
