Visco Memory Foam vs. Latex Mattress Beds - Research Results
This article discusses our real-world research findings that compare and contrast memory foam and latex mattresses.
If you are looking for unbiased information on how memory foam mattresses and latex mattress compare and contrast, you’ve come to the right place.
My research team collected data from about 1,300 actual memory foam and latex bed owners regarding their ownership experiences. We collected this information from about 100 or more online discussion groups, which tend to be sources of quality and useful information.
Below I will discuss comfort, durability, affordability and motion isolation.
Comfort
Based on our research, a somewhat higher percentage of latex bed owners than memory foam bed owners said that their mattress is comfortable. Specifically, the numbers are about 88% for latex and 83% for memory foam.
The reason people find latex a bit more comfortable has to do with the fact that latex is not weight and temperature sensitive like memory foam is. In other words, latex bed owners said that they did not have the feeling of "melting" into their mattress like memory foam owners indicated.
Durability
In regard to durability or longevity, both types perform about the same. There are instances of owners reporting sagging, but it is not widespread. Also, don't pay much attention to the claim from manufacturers and sellers that the beds can be expected to last for 20 years. Based on our data, you should be pleased if you can get around eight very comfortable years out of your memory foam or latex mattress.
Affordability
Memory foam has the edge here, at least currently. You can buy a quality memory foam bed, such as the Novaform brand, for under $1,000. Finding a good latex bed will cost you substantially more. Of course, memory foam can be very pricey too, the Tempurpedic brand case in point.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation is often important to people who share a bed with someone else. A bed with good motion isolation will prevent movement made by one person to transfer to and disturb the other person. On this point, the two types of mattresses are virtually equal (with a slight edge possibly going to memory foam) in that they are both effective in keeping motion transfer to a minimum.
