The Commonwealth of Virginia is a state on the Atlantic Coast of the United States of America. Virginia, often thought of as the gateway to the South, occupies the middle position on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. Named for Elizabeth I, England's so-called "Virgin Queen," Virginia is also referred to as the Old Dominion in recognition of the decision of Charles II to make the colony a fourth dominion of his realm, after England, Scotland, and Ireland. It is also known as the Mother of Presidents because it is the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents.
