Vincent van Gogh - His Life and Art on Canvas
Vincent van Gogh was a talented impressionist painter and influenced modern methods of Expressionism. He created a great multitude of paintings on canvas and other artworks within a decade. When van Gogh painted, he created thick strokes with his brush, and used colour and line for expression.
Dutch born Vincent van Gogh was an impressionist painter, and undoubtedly a talented one. His own individual touches lent uniqueness to his impressionist paintings. It was in the decade from 1880 to his death in 1890 that van Gogh produced all his over 2000 artworks which included around 900 oil paintings on canvas, with additional sketches and drawings. Well-known among the artist's paintings are "Starry Night" (1889), "The Potato Eaters" (1885), "Sunflowers" (1888), "Café Terrace at Night" (1888), "Portrait of Dr.Gachet" (1890), "Portrait of Joseph Roulin" (1888) , "Autumn Landscape" (1885) and "Self-Portrait" (1889).
Born the son of a pastor father, as Vincent Williem van Gogh on the 30th of March, 1853 in Groot-Zundert in Southern Netherlands, van Gogh had an upbringing that was both refined and religious. It was only in 1880 that he decided to take up the profession of being an artist. He studied drawing and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts located in Antwerp, Belgium.
The way van Gogh used colour and line in his paintings was an expression of his emotional reaction to the world that surrounded him. Typical colours that one would find in his palette included chrome yellow, chrome orange, lead white, red ochre, yellow ochre, raw sienna, Prussian blue, black and vermilion. The backgrounds of a couple of his paintings show the incorporation of his imitations of Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcuts.
A great body of van Gogh's canvases comprised of self-portraits. He was a highly productive self-portraitist, creating more than 30 depictions of himself in the years from 1886 to 1890. These works of art depicted both emotionally and technically, the chief preoccupations of the artist.
Van Gogh's renowned painting "Starry Night" portrays a town shielded by high cypress trees and the pointed church steeple. Shapes that are for the most part curved and rough textures characterize the artwork.
It was in Paris that van Gogh came into contact with Gauguin and befriended him. In Arles, van Gogh argued with his friend and stalked him which ultimately resulted in the painter cutting off a piece of his own earlobe. Following this, van Gogh suffered from serious mental illness and was sent for treatment to an asylum situated in Saint-Remy. When it seemed that his condition showed improvement, he set off to Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890. In the course of the year, van Gogh became more and more depressed and on the 27th of July, he shot himself and passed away two days later.
If you are an artist on a budget who enjoys painting on canvas you can find a wide selection of inexpensive canvas.
