Video Conferencing

What is Video Conferencing?
Videoconferencing, also known as Video Teleconferencing, is a meeting conducted via computers over a local area network (LAN) or telephone lines. Videoconferencing allows people at different locations to see and hear each other and participate in group or person-to-person discussion as if they were together in one location. Attendees can hear and see their fellow colleagues, work together on documents, spreadsheets, and other applications, even when using the system at separate locations. They save time by not traveling to be together.

Originally, videoconferencing systems available for sale were expensive and bulky, using large screens and projectors. Now, this same technology is used with PC systems equipped with video compression capabilities. Now all that's needed are a PC with a monitor-mounted video camera, software, and a video compression board. The technology is still bothered by technical problems like picture quality and standardization of operating systems. The video functions are still being developed, but once refined, the idea of videoconferencing will be widespread and a necessity in offices worldwide, reducing the need for travel time and expense.

Most off-the-Internet videoconferences use special video cameras at each geographic location to connect the participants via special telephone connections. In some newer approaches, images are simulated to make it appear as if the participants are in the same room. Videoconferencing is also used to broadcast seminars or to broadcast demonstrations, such as medical procedures in operating rooms.
