Vengeance - Prologue
Story of a girl who is bent on avenging the unexplainable murder of her mother.
When I was a little girl, my mother used to take me to this beautiful place where I could hear the birds chirping, the rush of waves of the lake that flow nearby and the blowing zephyr that made me feel alive. I used to play there for hours, running around trying to catch butterflies or following that little squirrel into the tree holes.
The park was at some distance from the city so no one came around here. It was calm and quite, just like I wanted it to be.
My mother used to sit on the bench watching out for me, making sure that I did not hurt myself. The unfathomable fear that stayed in her eyes all the time simply vanished when we came to this place. It was like some thought or memory put her at ease making her feel like nothing was going to shatter the peace that existed in our lives.
The smile on her face, every time I smiled and waved at her, was an assurance of safety for me. I felt like there was nothing that could harm me with her watching out for me.
I cherished what we shared. We were happy in our own little world.
If only I had known how short-lived my happiness was going to be. If only I had known that the next time I would turn around, I wouldn't see my mother's beatific smile; instead I would find her lying motionless in the muddle of blood staring lifelessly at the azure sky. If only I had known that, I would never have turned around. If only I had known...
..........................................................................................
Even today as my faith wavers and my will to continue the fight I have been fighting since I was a little girl threatens to crumble, I come to this place and the haunting memory of my mother's lifeless body ignites a flame inside me. The urge to find the people who ruined my life and took away the only person who mattered to me overpowers the dread of failure and I remind myself of the promise that I made to myself.
I, detective Grace Serene Smith, vow to avenge my mother's death. I will find the people responsible and will not rest until they are served justice.
With this promise I leave the place I once used to consider my safe haven. For now this place is no longer a source of bliss for me. It no longer holds the charm it once held for me. Today, it's just the place that brought me face-to-face with the cruel world and its unimaginable brutality.
