The vegetable and fruit diet is a weight loss and a cleanse diet. As the name suggests, one is supposed to consume only vegetable juice when on this diet. Sometimes, one can make additions of fresh fruits to make the juice; but no other foodstuff is allowed. One should not consume any solid food and processed or fast food is a total no-no. There are several health benefits associated with this liquid diet. Firstly, as one consumes only fresh vegetables and fruits, one gets all the essential amounts of nutrients (vitamins and minerals) from the diet. Secondly, vegetables contain fiber which help in making the stomach quickly feel fuller, and also act as appetite suppressant. Therefore, this diet is claimed to be a healthy diet. Vegetable Juice Recipes
One of the advantages of following this diet is that as there are a large number of vegetables available in the market, one has a wider choice to make juices from. You can simply pick any fresh vegetable, wash it, blend or mix it in a food processor, add some spices and have it fresh! The following is a recipe on tomato juice and a mix vegetable juice.
Tomato Juice
Ingredients:
- 3 cups of chopped tomatoes
- 1 sliced cucumber
- 1 stalk of celery
- ½ teaspoon of sea salt
- ¼ teaspoon of freshly ground pepper
- Blend / juice tomatoes, cucumber and celery in your food processor.
- Add sea salt and stir. Top with freshly ground pepper and have immediately!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of spinach
- 2 cups of kale
- 2 cups of parsley
- 1 sliced cucumber
- 2 stalks of celery
- 1-2 cloves of garlic / 1-2 slices of ginger (optional)
- You need to wash all the vegetables and juice / blend them in a food processor.
- The optional garlic / ginger should also be put in the food processor along with the vegetables.
Ingredients:
- 3 sliced carrots
- 1 sliced beet
- ½ lemon
- 1-2 small slices of ginger
- 1-2 cloves of garlic
- Mix carrots, beet, ginger and garlic in the food processor and juice.
- When the juice if formed, squeeze half lemon on the top, stir and serve!
The juice diet or the raw vegetable diet is not meant for those suffering from chronic illness, or recently undergone a surgery, or pregnant women. It is also advised to consult the doctor before going for this diet as one may suffer from side effects like headache, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, in the initial stages of this diet. The diet is also meant only for adults and should be followed under the supervision of a doctor or a nutritionist.
Although associated with some of the side effects and termed as a fad diet, the vegetable juice diet is relatively healthy as vegetables are healthy and contain beneficial nutrients. However, the diet is not meant for prolonged use as it is a liquid diet, and also lacks in proteins and carbohydrates.
