You will need a half cup of butter, shortening, and milk, a cup of granulated sugar, an egg, a teaspoon of vanilla, three and a half cups of flour, two teaspoons of baking powder, and a teaspoon of salt. For the filling you need another half cup of sugar, four and a half teaspoons of cornstarch, a half cup of orange juice, a fourth cup of re maraschino cherry juice, twelve maraschino cherries, and a tablespoon of butter.
If you have never made any kind of cookies with a filling, this will be a great experiment for you. First we start the cookies. Mix the butter and shortening together, along with the other wet ingredients, like the egg, milk, and vanilla. When this is smooth add the sugar, making sure to mix it in well. This mixture needs to be cooled for about two hours in the refrigerator.
You can make the filling during that period. Take out a small sauce pan and cook the cornstarch and sugar together. After it is warmed, add the juices and cherries in, bringing it to a boil for about a minute. Then let this mixture set as well in the refrigerator.
Going back to the cookie dough, roll it out thinly. Use a cookie cutter to make large heart shaped cuts, dipping each one in flour. Take out a cookie sheet and place half the heart on it. Next spoon our about a teaspoon of filling and place at the center of each heart. Place the other half of hearts on top of the filling, making sure to seal each one. Sprinkle the outside with sugar and cook for about 8-10 minutes, at about 350-375F.
