Planning to buy a gun? Well, it is a great idea, but first make sure you have a license and enough bucks in your pocket. For getting enough ammunition for your gun, there should be enough green arsenal in your pocket, eh fellas? Nevertheless, the matter at hand is about buying guns. Let's make things a bit easier for you. Initially it might be economical and practical to buy a second-hand or a used gun. Later on you could go in for a brand new gun. I would say that buying a used gun appears more complicated than buying a new one. Let us take a look.

Considerations for Buying Used Guns
There are a few things one needs to check before zeroing in upon a gun. Incidentally those very factors determine the value of the gun.

Handgun or a Rifle?
Have you decided as to what do you want to buy? Is it going to be the royal rifle or the compact handgun? Cost of a used gun depends on what type of a firearm is it and the model and the brand. The mechanism - bolt action or semi auto or lever action or single shot, also adds to the barrage of factors to be considered before the gun's value is fixed.

The Condition
Okay, so you have taken your pick and it is going to a particular model of handgun. Mauser or Beretta may be? Never mind. Now what you have to do is analyze the condition of the gun. There is fair chance that more worn out the gun is on account of usage, the less price it would have, generally. Unless it is in excellent condition, which is most unlikely. For that you need to see the bolt and check if the bearing surfaces are worn out. When closed, does the action lock up smoothly and properly? The wear and tear of the external parts of the gun can be sometimes marginalized if the inner mechanism is up to the mark.

Normally, when you check the gun properly, it gets pretty clear as to how well has the gun been maintained. In addition to the bolt, check the inside of the barrel of the gun, called bore. If the diameter of the barrel has been shortened on account of powder residue build up, think twice. Otherwise, cleaning it is not a major issue if other things are in place. Ask if you can fire and check it out.

The Standards
Used guns are divided into two categories - modern and antique. The modern gun standards are new, perfect, excellent, very good, good and fair. The antique ones on the other hand use a term called 'factory new' to refer to the fact that the parts are in the mint condition. These standards are laid down by National Rifle Association (NRA). The price of antique ones would obviously be more than the modern ones.

Cost of Used Guns
It appears that a rifle is costlier than a handgun. Used handguns can cost anything from $400 to something like $2,000. The upper limit of course depends on what kind of a model it is, the magazine, the cartridge and what is the condition. The range starts from around $700 as regards used rifles. Whatever make and model you buy even with all the precautions and checking, you might end up with something which does not suit you. You need not pay top dollar for that. In this situation you could also ask for replacement. If you are unsure about the pricing, consult a price guide. That will give you a fair idea of the current rates.

So which one are you going to go bombastic with? Remington or a Colt?!
